I work on 6th ave. between 19 and 20th and am still looking to find a takeout lunch/sandwich (casual, below 10$) spot I like. I've tried Spoon and Fifth Avenue Epicure, and both were good enough but less than stellar.

Any recommendations? I'd heard about a promising French bakery (J'Adore on 23rd st) but also heard a rumor it is now closed. Anyone?

The ideal meal would be a baguette-heavy joint with ham/brie-esque fare, but really anything decent for lunch works just fine.

J'Adore is closed. Try Petite Abeille or City Bakery. There's a 'wichcraft nearby as well.

there's madeliene patisserie on 23rd btwn 6th and 7th (south side of street) that's a suitable replacement. quiche's and croque's along with sandwiches and the plenty of patisserie dessert fare.

blue dog on 25th @6th also has nice sandwiches with ham & brie baguettes...

Would rec City Bakery. They do a stellar, delicious buffet lunch which is overcosted, but high quality.

Would also highly rec for takeout and funkiness Tebaya over on 19th and 7th. Really deliciously unhealthy Japanese Wings/Fried Chicken. Make sure to get the combo plates with the wings!

And yes, there is a 'witchcraft on 20th between Bway and 5th.
Zaro's opened on Bway at 20th? - You can sometimes get some good things there. City Bakery for the extensive and expensive salad(+) bar, but there sandwiches are nothing to write home about. One more - I haven't tried yet but am curious about - on 18th between 5th and Bway -Tarallucci e Vino It's just past Rosa Mexicano heading east. Looks very tasty. Happy lunching

For some options outside of your baguette/ham/brie requirement, here are my Flatiron district standbys (I'm at 23rd and 5th/Broadway):

-Rainbow Falafel on 17th between 5th/bway. They have whole wheat pitas and great hot sauce, and good for those of us who can't spend much. The chicken schwarma is under $5.
-Cafe Medina, also on 17th between 5th/bway, has very nice sandwiches, salads, soups w/bread etc. for a few bucks cheaper than some of the ones at City Bakery. Still not what I consider in my price range for every day, but my target is more like 7 and under instead of 10.
-La Tina's, 23rd between 3rd and 2nd (north side of st.), for much cheaper cuban than cafe havana. You can get a huge plate of Ropa Vieja over rice and beans with a drink for about $7. They also have other latin american fare and their burritos are definitely two days of food. They deliver, if time is of concern.
-For tacos that are less gringo than Chipotle/Uncle Moe's, try Great Burrito at 23rd and 6th (south side of street, not easy to spot). They have pizza for some reason, but ignore it. They have tortas, tacos, etc and they are very generous with meat. Plus the fridge is stocked with Jarritos...
-You're within walking distance of the Union square green market (m,w,f), so you can always pick up some bread and cheese if that's a favorite lunch
-Republic in union square has good Asian soups and if you order with noodles, they may last two days, but will be over $10. I'm fairly certain they also do delivery.
-Bienvenuto at 23rd and Bway has passable paninis and sandwiches, and similar salad prices to everyone else in the area. The salad is pre-priced with a number of toppings they mix for you, so if you pick right (chickpeas, egg, etc.), you can get a very filling meal.
-Rickshaw on 23rd between 5th and 6th. Yes, their dumplings are more expensive than chinatown, but who has a job that lets them go all that way for lunch? You can get out for under $10 with some dumplings and soup/salad. Not the best in the city, but good in a bind as they are the only dumpling option in you target radius.

These are my main haunts off the top of my head, but there are loads of places around. That said, you should still try madeliene for their macarons ($2.50 each, ouch!) which are probably the best in the Flatiron area. I think the staff at Mangia (23rd between 5th and 6th) are rude, but you may also find what you're looking for there (it is also $$). Good luck!
