ex-newyorker looking for good herring. I miss russ and daughters on Houston in NY. Any chance of comparably herring (esp. schmaltz fillets) in LA or San Diego (I recognize the chances of that are slim)?

Thanks

You might try Junior's or Factor's in L.A., or Art's or Brent's in the valley. Can't vouch for how they might compare to Russ & Daughters though. Or maybe Langer's. If Langer's does not come through on the herring they will make it up to you with their pastrami.

For real matjes fillets, the way I like them (not oversalted) the best importer around here is Holland America near Artesia. They do sell their herring elsewhere. I've bought it at the German Deli on Roscoe a few blocks west of the freeway. It comes frozen, once thawed, it's the best. Seriously.

Mail order! I always get the "fresh" available only in May/June - it comes overnight in an ice pack.

I agree that Gustaf Anders has the best selection of herring, but I don't think they have schmaltz like I had at Russ and Daughters on Houston. I recently had their herring in sour creme, curried, and about 10 other styles and it was wonderful. This was at the Christmas Smorgasbord but I believe they offer a herring plate for lunch.

As well, try the Russian markets along Santa MOnica Blvd between La Brea and La Cienega. I just had some wonderful herring at Traktier at the corner of Crescent Heights and Santa Monica.

If you like Abbas jars, you can get them at IKEA or at Olsson's (Olsen's?) (as I remember it is only open during the day, during the week on Pico). Actually, Olsson's may have their own pickled herring. I was only there once. They had frozen eel, but I didn't buy any. I did get knackebrod and some Abbas jars and some other supplies.

If anyone gets a good source for non-pickled herring fillets of the deli variety, please post it. I want to make Glassblower's Herring again! Alas, in Minneapolis a simple trip over to Ingebretson's on Lake Street and we could all have bunches of herring in hand.... It must be available somewhere in LA.
