La Fontana Italian City Bistro- Poway

I have been looking for outstanding dining spots with reasonable pricing for a number of years in the San Diego North County area of Poway/Scripps Ranch with limited resutls. Always ready for an excellent meal with finely tuned flavors and varity GOOD enough for more then one weekly visits. It has necessary to drive up to Rancho Bernardo or LaJolla to enjoy some nice and tasty preparations on a consistent basis at more pricey levels.

In this unending search for excellent dishes at moderate prices, Poway has given us a surprising nice place, that is closer to home. The La Fontana Italian restaurant provides a Menu devoted to Italian AND Continental dishes to please the most discerning palate! There is something for everyone, even if they would like something other then Italian. And I am not speaking of American Italian, we are so used to. All of the dishes are finely prepared in manner, that we are not used to in a neighborhood restaurant.

On my first taste of the first dish ordered, I was so impressed with the fine exceptional unforgetable taste of the Fresh Baby Spinach Saladwith Carmalized Walnuts, Red Onion Sliced, Fresh Sliced Mushroom, Honey Pecans, Balsamic Dressing and Goat Cheese, that I had to meet and talk to the owner, Amado, a very gracious 'hands on' Gentleman to compliment him! Even the bread was a delidious treat with a drizzle of reduced Balsamic vinegar and a Martini glass containing scoops of grated carrots, grated red cabbage, and soft butter to be mixed together as you see fit. Both carrot and red cabbage are favorites of mine, They were more then a perfect compliment for the bread and starter!

The complements imcreased, when the Seared Alaskan Halibut with a Saffron Beurre Blanc Sauce was served with a wonderful artistic presentation, that added to the unique flavors not found in most other restaurants.! This sealed my respect for the kitchen with the decision to dine here weekly at the very least. Firecacker Strawberries Genoa with strawberries in a Brown Sugar Glaze and a pinch of Cajun on a Mound of French Vanilla Ice Cream was a perfect ending for this unforgetable meal all at a very reasonable moderate price. A third to half the price of the other spots serving fine cuisine prepared to order meal. The consistency of quality from visit to visit is another plus for La Fontana City Bistro and the hands on owner Amado, which brings me back so often.

There are so many more dishes to try, that I want to return more often then weekly, when deciding on a place to go. The next test dishes I have ordered to further my evaluations were the House California Mixed Greens, Toasted Pistachio, Cucumber, Crisp Wonton and Mango Speers. Another nice flavorable surprise with a fine dressing. On this visit, I sampled the Lasagna, which proved to have the FRESHEST taste, that I ever experienced.for this creation! It was so much better then even the best Home Made Lasagna to date. Never experienced this before, anywhere! Remaining half proved to be a great lunch the next day. YUMMMM! This was followed by Pollo alla Marsala, which proved to be one of the most refined preparations, that I had the opportunity to order and enjoy. Well, by now I was hooked on the place.

Thursdays have a Prixe Fixe Dinners at $19.00 for a choice of Soup or Salad, Beef, Seafood or Pasta, and Homemade Cheesecake, as fresh as can be! The Flat Iron Steak was my choice and was more then pleased. Lean as I prefer and more flavor, then I expected. A slice of the Homemade Cheesecake was a nice finish for another great dining treat. Worth every penny, and more then satisfied. How often can we say that upon leaving other restaurants?

Daily Specials are srved with Choice of Fettuccini Alfredo, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Garden Rice and vegetables.

Sundays Special are Half priced bottles of wine. A full seperate bar with Bar Menu dishes available. It should be a favorite Sports bar for many! A seperate Dining room with a fireplace is availalbe for private parties and meetings. Open for Lunch, as well.

Amado is busy in the Kitchen and the Dining Room making sure everything is right and everyone is HAPPY! You will see what I mean by 'hands on' management by the time you leave, for sure! :)
Tell Amado, you read this on Chowhouds.com and want to see if it is as good as you read on here!

There is even a computer available to check on your emails. :)

  1. Strange! The Menu for an Extended Restaurant week at $30.00 was added to this Topic and it seems to have disappeared. Perhaps you can call La Fontana and ask what the Menu consists of.

As I recall there are 3 choices for each of 3 courses:

    Beginnings:
Diced Tuna Tartar Lemon Marinated with Avocado and Mango,
Prosciutto Apple Slices with Miso Dressing,
    Soup du Jour.

    Main Dish:
Cracked Pepper Filet Mignon Stack, Wilted Spinach, Steamed Potatoes, Grilled Portobello mushrooms with Red Wine Shallot Reduction.
Grilled Halibut with Fresh Vegetables, White Rice and Shittake Scallion Beurre Blanc.
Oven Roasted Duck Breast servied with Fresh Vegetables, Cherries and Port Wine Sauce.

    and a Nice Finish:
Farm White Nectarines with Vanilla Ice Cream and Raspberry Sauce.
French Crepe Stuffed with Fresh Strawberry served on Vanilla Ice Cream
    Fresh Home Made Cheese Cake.
