Marseille - Never Again

Spiritchaser Jun 6, 2008 05:59 AM

Just had another meal at Marseille and it will be the last. It was just down right horrible. I ordered duck and they brought me beef, when I pointed it out the waiter went to the computer screen and I could see from his expression it was the wrong order. He quickly got the plate off the table and had the manager come over. He refused to admit their mistake. When I tried to explain that the components on the plate weren't even correct for the duck I was told I was wrong. The manager said he still had the plate in the back but when I suggested he bring it back out to show me they components were correct and it was in fact duck he quickly changed the subject and suggested I try another dish. My GF asked me to please let it go in order to salvage the evening so I backed down and had the lamb cous cous, I wish I hadn't, it was horrible, nothing more needs to be said. It was so flawed I left feeling like I was pickpocketed.

I have given Marseille great recommendations in the past but this did it for me. I'm not up on any changes to management or kitchen staff but this is not the same place.

Bummer - my husband and I had a spectacular meal there last January and had been planning to go back next week.

That is really inexcusable, and if it happened to me I would certainly not go back, but I have been there several times in the last few months, including just last week, and have not experienced any problems. I had the lamb couscous for the second time, and it was excellent, just as it was the previous time, so I would still not hesitate to recommend the restaurant to others.

Agreed - a surprisingly bad experience for the OP; however, we've eaten at Marseilles many times, including last week, and have always enjoyed both the food and the service.

I had horrible service the last time I was at Marseille. But the food was good, and I wouldn't actively avoid going back.

I echo the other posters- always a good experience. The one iffy day was Xmas, but I never expect too much from any place on a major holiday. When I say iffy, it was because the food was not as good as it usually is- but still much better than most places in that area. I have never had a service problem- and given the fact that I am gluten intolerant, that can be a big issue.

I have eaten at Marseille many times, mostly for brunch. We have always had good experiences both foodwise and service.
However, managements attitude to spirtchaser is disgusting. I would be mad as well.

              Thanks s.piller (and others).

I am not doubting everyone elses positive experiences, I had them as well (you'll note before this incident I thought that place was fantastic) but I can only comment on my latest visit. I'll still go back to the bar area just never the restaurant.

I was just about to make a reservation at Marseille and now I am not so sure. Help! Any other suggestions for a pre-theater dinner, not outrageously priced- in this area. I have a group of 14 people.

I really love Marseille, so I'm sad to read about bad service there. My experience was very different from the original poster's. As for a large group, I recommend Carmine's on 44th/7th. Family-style Italian, solid food, and good value. Order the eggplant parm as an app.

thanks for the Carmines recommendation but definitely not the kind of experience we are looking for. we're not looking for the traditional kind of atmosphere or menu. current considerations are Taboon, Anthos, and Bar Room at the Modern as well as Marseille.

Scratxh Carmine's too noisy, too busy and the food is only sub par.

I had an amazing meal the other day at Roberto Passon on 50th and 9th. I had an amazing grilled octopus appetizer that I'm still thinking about

I agree. Roberto Passon is a gem. I haven't been in several months now but am glad to know it's still so good.

I ate at Marseille for the first time this week and it was wonderful. Don't change your plans because one person had a bad experience. There isn't a single restaurant in the city where someone hasn't had a bad experience.
