Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Tristate Area

Kid Friendly in Harrison, NY

About once a month my father and step-mom come to visit the grandkids and we generally like to go out for dinner. My kids get rambuncious after an hour or so and there are so few restaurants we're comfortable bringing them to. They are 3 and 5 and are very picky eaters.

We usually go to Wellingtons on Halstead Ave but we're all getting a bit tired of it. Has anyone else had success bringing young children to any restaurants in the area, Harrison, Rye, Mamaroneck? I'm thinking of trying Rues Des Crepes but don't know if the kids will like the food or if they will tolerate a bit of unruly behavior. My kids aren't mosters, but do get restless after a while.

    1. Uncle Henry's on Halstead Ave. Great Burgers and Wings.

        1. These are slightly outside your area, but here are some restaurants I've taken my 4 year old to with success in Port Chester:

T&J Villagio Trattoria (Italian food, on Westchester Ave., a sit down restaurant, but they have a pizzeria next door)
Edo (Japanese hibachi - the cooking will keep the kids entertained)
Q (BBQ, you pay when you order, so no waiting for a check)
Pizza Pasta & Things (decent Italian food, awesome garlic knots)
Michael's (sort of divey inside, but the outside seating area is nice and the pan pizza is excellent)
Tandoori (Indian food - mine will eat maybe the bread there, but it's otherwise kid friendly)

Went to T&J Villagio with the Family, great service, the kids weren't that hungry so they split a chicken finger dish, which wasn't a problem, the waitress offered any combination for the kids, a pasta mix and steamed broccoli as well. I had the special Pollo Sorentino ($22), my wife had the Chilean Seabass ($29) we shared a plate of sauteed broccoli rabe, everything was delicious, both entrees came out hot which is rare. Backtracking a little, they started with warm Italian and sourdough bread with strips of Parmesean. My wife and I shared 3 glasses of wine (filled close to the top). This was our first time at this restaurant and definitely not our last. Very attentive service, this place is clearly run by the owners because not once was I given a blank stare when we asked a question. All in for 5 w/o dessert was $130. the decor is dated but cozy, similiar to Grandmas dining room.

I totally agree with you about T&J. It has become our family Italian standby. They serve good, solid red sauce Italian at reasonable prices. The service is always friendly and competent. We are regular, but not frequent customers (we go every few months or so), but the staff remembers us and always makes us feel welcome. On nights when they are crowded and their kitchen is moving a bit slowly, they will often bring out a salad or something for us to nibble on to make the wait tolerable. Gestures like this go a long way. And I agree-- It's nice to get a generous pour of wine.

Back at T&J last night with the parents. I ordered off the PRIE FIX menu last night, Starter slaed, which I gave to my wife, huge plate of mussels for an appetizer, incredible, and brashol w/gnocchi and marinara. First time I ever bought home the food for lunch the next day. Had the amaretto cake for dessert (a classic). All for $20.95

We are considering going to T&J tomorrow evening after my daughter's ballet recital in Purchase. I'm a little confused though since I have never been to T&J before. I know that there is the restaurant and there is the pizza place. Which one would be more appropriate for our group of 7, including a 4.5 year old and a 2.5 year old? A friend suggested the pizza place, but does it have waiter/waitress service (I don't want to be ordering at the counter)? We will arrive around 5:30, so I was not planning to make a reservation. Do I need one?

                      Thanks.

I have never been to the pizza place one, but the "restaurant" one--T&J's Villaggio Trattoria-- does groups of all sizes all the time, and there are always young kids eating there. It's totally a family place, especially early in the evening. They get really busy on weekends, but I don't know if you'd need a reservation at 5:30. Never hurts to make one for a party of seven, though. I do think the "other" T&J's has waitress/waiter service, but the tables look more crammed together in there. That's why we have never chosen to eat there.

                              Great, thanks.
