Solomon Korean Restaurant Report - Providence
I'd like to give a report about this place I first read about here 3 years ago when my daughter went off to Brown. She's been going occasionally, but now I finally had a chance on Saturday.
It is a little storefront that I suppose was a market called Solomon before, but now is a full time restaurant. (M -Sat 11 am - 9 pm, closed Sun.)
The place is small, tables for 8, 6, 5, 4, and couple of deuces, irrc. The menu is limited to 20 items, but is interesting. It is a nice, but homey feel. Fairly casual-- the kitchen is along the back wall, they make Kimchi in a big tub in the room. You help yourself to water refills from the cooler.
We ordered the fried dumplings (they also have steamed), where they give you 4 shrimp one and 4 beef one with a dipping sauce ($6.99.) They also brought us 2 good sized bowls on the house. Thickly sliced cucumbers in mild (but scary looking) red chile paste always comes with the meal, but they only sometimes have the blanched bean sprouts in sesame oil--those were addictively delicious.
We ordered my daughter's favorite dish, the Stone Pot Bi Bim Bop ($11.99.) You can choose beef or tofu and there are veggies as well as an egg on top. They also have a regular Bi Bim Bop ($9.99), but the stone pot one is wonderful, the dish stays hot and the rice along the bottom carmelizes and gets a little crunchy and chewy. They brought a small dish with a large pile of chile paste and my daughter insisted to put it all in and mix everything up. It was fine and added smokey flavor and just a mild hotness.
These were generous servings. Two females managed to eat it all, but barely and we really overstuffed ourselves. We also split a tall Arizona watermelon drink. The bill was $21.
Another dish we almost ordered, and will likely go back for is my daughter's second favorite: kimchi and beef fried rice ($11.99.) They have a soft tofu dish I'd like to try, soups, noodles, spicy squid, spam sausage and kimchi rice, Bool go gi (beef) always on the menu, and a couple specials, one was pork bool go gi.
Very nice food I'd be happy to eat anytime, this is friendly food for those unfamiliar with Korean. Clean, healthy, delicious. I reccommend it if you like these kinds of flavors. I've only done the cook-it-yourself beef with panchan before and it was nice to try a few new things.
By the way, we went early on Sat, around 6 pm, and had the place to ourselves, excepting a take-out order. They were nice, not too much English spoken, but allowed me to park my bike inside cause I didn't have a lock. I'd support this little place, chowhounds!

I second your support! I've really loved everything I've tried there. You couldn't find a "homier" place, with the kitchen right in the dining room and cooking smells permeating everything. My one warning is that it appears to be quite, litterally, a mom and pop place, so if you go when it's crowded it might take the nice couple making the food a while to serve all the other sons and daughters for the evening and to get to your meal.
I'll add that its BYOB with a liquor store next door.
