We had a delightful lunch experience at Shogun (Cumberland) today.
The place was quiet and we sat at the chef's table. We ordered mostly a la carte sashimi: toro, salmon, ikura, hamachi, all were fresh and of generous portions.
The agedashi tofu came in a great mirin marinate and shivering banito flakes, topped with thinly sliced green onion and ginger.
The unadon was delicious as well, topped with shitake mushroom and pickled daigon.
My chiwan mushi (egg custard) was diving, with scallops, chicken, mushroom and fish stock.
We will definitely go back.
since the demise of Omi, shogun has been my go-to place for good quality, affordable sushi. the staff there are very friendly and you'll always get a hot towel before your meal and some oranges and prime cantaloupe (or pineapple) afterwards.
i recommend the sushi pizza, it's the best in the city (that i've had).
this all being said, i'm still waiting for John Lee to come out of hiding and reinvent Omi somewhere else. I never minded paying the $100+/person for his omakase.
