Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Tristate Area

EWR Airport and surrounding area

I have a 5 hour layover soon in Newark and will have this situation often throughout the year due to work and travel and my flight sked. Any tips where to eat?

  1. Ferry Street is the obvious answer for Spanish/Portuguese/Brazilian fare.

    Casa Vasca
    Fernandes 2
    Seabra Marisqueira
    Brasiia

    For Old School Italian, there's:

Spirito's in Elizabeth. Veal Parmigiana, Eggplant and Ravioli's are the way to go. The pizza is good, but there are better, like Santillos IMHO.

In Jersey City, go to Laico's on Terhune Street:

    (201) 434-4115

Thanks for the Santillos alert... I've always wondered about that place and will get a pie soon. In the good news department La Caravana seems to be rebuilding down on Bayway closer to the bridge. This was my favorite Peruvian joint anywhere. They had a fire last year. To add to your list, I recently had some good churrasco at Penalva Do Castelo at 600 Jackson Ave, Elizabeth, 07201 (908) 354-0745

    2. How far are these places from the airport more or less, please?

      1. re: luci

In relation to the New Jersey Turnpike, Newark Liberty is situated between Exits # 13-A and 14. Elizabeth is just south of the airport, and as Jfood notes is 10-15 minutes at most with traffic. Ferry Street would be the next exit 15W north, but from the airport would be accessed traveling on NJ State Highway 21, Again, this is at most a 15 minute ride. Jersey City is accessed via Exit 15E and Route 440. Laico's would probably take 15 minutes, 20 at most. This is the furthest of my suggestions to you.

The major obstacle for these suggestions would normally be street parking for your car, but assuming you will be jumping in a taxi from the airport, you need not factor in any additional travel time. When you are nearing the end of your meal, you can request any of the restaurants to call for another taxi to be waiting for you at the conclusion of your meal for your return to the airport.

BTW......Spirito's is not open for lunch. Opening times are 3:00 PM Weekends and 5:00 PM Weekdays from recollection. A telephone call would be best to confirm.

Hello so in summary, Elizabeth is closest. What is the approximate taxi fare? MANY THANKS..I will be doing this a lot..

      2. gotta go to spiritos in the Big E for raviolis. It's a 10-15 minute drive.

        1. Learn the public transport system- airtrain to NJtransit- to get to Ferry St- and prepare yourself for delayed flights.
Lots of new restaurants opening in Newark in the coming months. Stay tuned...
