Szechuan in SF?

We fancy spicy food tonight. Does anyone have any recommendations for good Szechuan food in San Francisco?

  1. I think there are some Szechuan offerings at Henry's Hunan

Henry's offerings are mostly Hunanese, but they tend to be every bit as spicy as Sichuan dishes.

No Sichuan at Henry's, but they have some great spicy dishes. My favorites are the hot and sour beef and the smoked ham.

How's the quality at the Sansome location. I used to go here a lot in the mid to late 80s and always loved the food. Haven't been back since.

      2. Meant to link.

Note also that there are two or three more Henry's locations, one closer to BART (somewhere on Kearny? not positive).

Yup, opening soon in Noe Valley in the former Yianni's/Pescheria place, as well as these other locations:

The Sacramento St. location is just off Kearny. (Actually, the ORIGINAL Henry's was on Kearny).

In addition, ZY Garden (Chinatown) has some righteously spicy dishes on the Sichuan side of the menu and Zone 88 on San Bruno Avenue is a good bet for Sichuan cuisine.

              1. re: Xiao Yang

Can anyone offer a ZY vs. Spices comparison? I really should just head to ZY myself, but I keep forgetting.

                1. re: Pei

I thought Z Y was food from Yunnan. Which would still be spicy, but still.

                  1. re: Windy

The owner is from Yunnan and there are a few dishes from Yunnan. However, there are more Sichuan dishes that were held over from the previous management.

                    1. re: Windy

Z & Y was formerly Sam Lok, which specialized in Sichuan food. When it changed ownership, it added a chef from Yunnan and expanded the Sam Lok menu to include Yunnan dishes. The Z and Y, beleive it or not, stand for sZechwan and Yunnan :-)

The two most famous Yunnan dishes on the menu. Crossing the Bridge Noodles and Steampot Chicken are, in fact, quite bland but the Sichuan carry-overs haven't lost any heat.

                      1. re: Windy

Z&Y has mostly Sichuan dishes and only a few Yunnan specialties. The Yunnan ham with green pepper I'd order again, the "crossing the bridge" noodles and "steam chicken" I probably wouldn't.

                2. I'd take Z&Y over Zone 88, unless you're in the mood for hot pot.

Or a mountain of crispy eel, Mmmmm....
