Arbuelita's (spelling?) in Topanga Canyon is good and at night you can sit on the patio for an esp. groovy dinner while enjoying your cocktail of choice. Also, La Paz Seafood Mexican on Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon is good. Both of these establishments are close to the W.Valley and only take 20 minutes to get to; faster then tugging along the 101 to the westside. Also, I hear there is a new Mexican restaurant in the refurbished Topanga Mall that has gotten pretty good reviews.

The best in the Valley would be Las Fuentes in Reseda. It's pretty solid.

Sol y Luna, the sit-down place, in Tarzana is owned by the Las Fuentes family but a notch below Las Fuentes. Some nights, they are really good. Other nights, they are off.

If you don't mind fusion Mexican, give Amaranta a try. I've been going there lately. It's not authentic, but it's very tasty.

            Amaranta is out of business.
Of course, most of this post is about 2 years old, so no surprise things might have changed a bit in that time.

SOL Y LUNA on the north side of Ventura Blvd. near Corbin is very good. The owners also own two casual order-at-the-counter places, LAS FUENTES (on the north side of Vanowen, east of Reseda) and MELODY'S (on the west side of Reseda just south of Vanowen). I like SIERRA'S on Canoga (not sure what the cross street is--maybe Vanowen?), but I doubt many would say it's 'great.' LOS TOROS in Chatsworth (north side of Devonshire, east of Topanga) is very popular.

However, IMHO there are no great Mexican restaurants here. The closest place for great Mexican is FRIDA'S on Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills.

there is a Frida's at the Americana at Brand now. I love Frida's, just wish we had more Mexican restaurants like it.
