Lunch near US 60 - Tempe to GC (PHX)
I'm playing golf tomorrow in Gold Canyon and would like to stop and get lunch on the way back; GC is devoid of anything chow-worthy. Looking for something along the US 60, within two miles of the freeway. Preferably something ethnic, excluding sushi. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for all the suggestions.
This post (http://thedish.freedomblogging.com/2008/05/07/joan%e2%80%99s-kitchen-feeds-craving-for-flint-style-coneys/) reminded me about the Flint-style coneys available only on Saturdays - since I needed to stop at Penzey's already, it seemed logical to try them out...
Am I ever glad I did. Now, I have never been to Flint, MI, nor do I know anyone from there. So while I can't vouch for their authenticity, I will say that they are very very good. I cannot help but draw a comparison to my favorite wiener in RI (http://www.olneyvillenysystem.com/hom...), because minus the celery salt, they're pretty similar in taste. The hot dogs have a nice bite and texture - these are no Ball Park's. The meat sauce, while probably not anything special on it's own, has a good flavor and as the owner Jim told me, it "brings everything together". Finely chopped onions and mustard round out they coney.
$7.75 inc. two coneys, fries (slightly overcooked for my tastes) and a large drink.
Other menu items include:
"The Original Clio Road" Sloppy Joe
Meatloaf (Joan's Recipe
...and more. Nothing is more than $8.50 (email me if you want a PDF of the menu).
Go order 2 UP - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Disclaimer: I live in Gold Canyon. You're correct, we're not a dining destination. There are a couple of new-ish Chinese (?) places out here and I have not yet eaten in either one. My favorite "Go-To" lunch spot, an ethnic dive, is in A.J. on The Trail called Los Favoritos. It's on the south side of Apache Trail between Ironwood and Signal Butte. A burrito is about $4 and makes my tummy smile; my favs include carne adovada and chorizo. DH likes the machaca burrito at all hours of the day. NB: please note the "dive" aspect of this rec. A fine dining destionation, it ain't.
The Gold Canyon Gold Resort has a restaurant and it is nothing special. If you're playing golf at Superstition Mountain CC, the clubhouse has a very good restaurant and you ought to give consideration to lunch there.
Not ethnic but just S. of Flancer's on Gilbert and VERY HIGHLY recommended, Grainbelt Grillhouse. They don't get much "press" from this board but I love this place. Excellent service, too.
Also, across the street from them (about 3 miles south of the 60 BTW
)Euro Cafe, OMG their menu is HUGE and the portions are bigger so order accordingly:)
2 more, Dragonfly Kitchen @ Dobson just N. of the 60 @ Southern
Benjarong Thai @ Country Club just N. of the 60
Euro Cafe is my favorite restaurant. I've been a patron (and now feel like a part of the family) for almost 14 years. Once a month they have an awesome food and wine pairing. The dishes created by Romeo (the chef and co-owner) are not on his regular menu and a different winery is featured each month.
The portions are huge and whenever I order an entree, my husband and I split it (we just order an additional side salad). Speaking of salads - the feta dressing is the best.
I take all of my out of town guests to Euro and they all love it. Whenever they come back for visits they always say, "We're going to that Euro Cafe again, right?" I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant.
Siamese Cat Thai Restaurant is on the southbound 101 service road just south of the US 60/101 intersection. Tara and I ate there a few weeks back and it was pretty good.
There's also the Dobson/Warner intersection near LeeLee's. Anise Vietnamese Restaurant is across the street from them. I haven't been, but their menu online looks good. They are in the shopping center in the NW corner.

Thanks, Efe's isn't a bad thought, I just mentioned it on another thread about kebabs, but I haven't been there in a couple years. I love Flancer's, and do it about once a month, so looking for something else. Of course, I'm tempted to just grab another Culver's Bacon Deluxe, but I thinking I want to try something new.
