Christopher's Cafe in Colts Neck?

    It's been ages since we've had dinner at Christopher's Cafe. Chris is a talented chef, and we used to enjoy going there occasionally. The food was always well-prepared, and the place itself was reasonably pleasant. A few years ago, he expanded into the adjoining space. We had dinner there shortly thereafter, and the meal was a disappointment. Thus, we haven't been back since. I've been considering giving it another try but haven't had the opportunity yet. If you do decided to try it, I'd be very interested in hearing what you have to say.

      We tried it on the advice of a friend about 2 years ago for dinner. The food was extremely disappointing and the service indifferent and uncaring. We have not tried again.

        My experience of about two years ago was quite similar to your's, Bossa Nova. I haven't returned.

          Hearing this from the two of you has definitely turned me in the direction of not giving Christopher's another try. I had been thinking that, perhaps, we had just hit it on a bad night. However, now it seems fairly obvious that this is one of those situations where expansion has damaged what used to be a very good restaurant. Sad!

            What a shame. The menu looks very nice. Thanks RGR, Bossa Nova and jsfein. You have saved me from a terrible mistake!! (One that I seem to make too often!!)

    2. Was there a few weeks ago. It's a quaint little place. Feels like I stepped back in time. The service is casual and friendly. It's good for those nights when you just want a bite to eat, nothing fancy. Both times I had the roasted chicken. Simple sides dishes of mashed potatoes and vegetables.
      Back page of the menu has sandwiches.
      I might just go back again tonight.

        I've only been there several times for lunch, usually when I stop by the Orchards. I always get the quiche which comes with a small salad. I don't know what's up with the service. it seems they have one waiter for the whole restaurant, "TJ", although friendly- he's all over the place. And it's a bit of a wait when you get your change back too. My 86 year old mother likes it because "it's cute" and she's complained enough that the busboy knows her enough that unless her coffee "is so hot she can sue you for it" she'll return it.

          I think it was "cuter" when it was just the original space. It had only a few tables with some additional seating upstairs. (Don't know if that's still the case.) Whenever we'd go for dinner, Chris would come out to say hello. Chris's wife -- whose name I have forgotten -- ran the "foh." She was very sweet and knew who we were. One or two waiters -- they were always nice, clean-cut, friendly college guys -- got the job done.

          We never minded that the menu hardly changed. Our only quibble was that Chris served the same sides with every main dish. But we understood that he was doing it all himself (no sous chef) and needed to keep thing relatively simple. He had the most amazing crispy coconut covered shrimp on the apps menu, and his magret was not too shabby either.
