June 7 and 8 in Munich

We will be in Munich for the weekend as part of a business trip, staying near the central train station. We don't have a car - would like to find several good nearby restaurants that won't break the bank and would love to really sample local cuisine. Thanks in advance!

I like the food at the Paulaner (moderately priced) and at Spatenhaus an der Oper (a little more expensive, in the square of the Opera) better than the food at the Augustiner. The Augustiner seemed like a bit of a tourist trap, whereas there were a lot of Germans eating at Paulaner and Spatenhaus on my visits.

Spatenhaus was more expensive than the Paulaner, but it served some of the most delicious tradtional Bavarian food I had on my last visit.

I like Cafe Rischart for sweets and sandwiches- it's a small chain coffee shop/ konditorei with several locations, including Marienplatz, but it's a great place for a coffee and a slice of cake, or a quick breakfast. They have a dining room upstairs at the Marienplatz location.

Around the train station, it's mostly doner kebab places, so I encourage you to make the 15 minute walk to Marienplatz, Operplatz, etc.

Leberkaese is a specialty you'll find- the word technically means livercheese, but it doesn't contain either- it's more like a meatloaf. Not to everyone's taste- but comfort food for this part of Germany.

Enjoy Munich- it's my favourite city for eating in Germany!

Seehaus (Beergarden). Have a beer in the sun and watch the people.

Lunch: Fishsoup at "Fisch Witte", Viktualienmarkt.

Order "Nuerberger mit Kraut" at Bratwurstglöckl. Sit inside.

Have a 2am Currywurst at Bergwolf (Fraunhoferstr.)

Have a memorable night at "Makassar" in Dreimuehlenstr.

Enjjoy some great wine and food at "Kleinschmitz" in Fraunhoferstr.

At this time of year, try the white aspargus at "Zum Franziskaner" (Perusatr. 5, across from the opera)

For Pizza, go to "Pizzeria Grano" (Sebastianplatz). Cheap, friendly and wonderful.
