I am looking for a new stove. I've never cooked with gas and think I would like it but don't know what to buy I'm so confused! I was looking at the Five Star, the higher priced model, I like the look of it and the price seems more reasonable. Has anyone purchased this brand and what did you think of it?

    I have a Viking but if I had to replace my range today I would be looking at Five Star. Is there a reason your going dual fuel? I could never cook with out gas. The electric oven is only beneficial if you bake a lot and the dual fuel is typically more $$$.

      Thanks for your reply. I've read that dual fuel is the way to go. I bake only occasionly but I read that the convection oven is also good for roasting, which I probably do more of. Why would you consider the Five Star over a Viking, it's the other brand I'm considering. What about BTU's what would you look for? Having not cooked with gas this is a learning curve.

        If you don't bake a lot then consider all gas. Dual fuel is best for baking because the electric regulator in the oven provides a more even cooking temperature than gas. The gas ovens are convection as well so for roasting I greatly orefer the gas convection. I prefer all gas because of the the broiler. You will also want to consider if the dual fuel unit in the brand you are considering requires an electronic motherboard. If so that is an expensive part that can fail from grease impregnation over time. Just some thing to consider.
        Reasons to consider Viking over Five Star;
        The product has been around longer. Huge dealer network. Parts availability. The Viking is a modular unit meaning it can be completly disassembled so every part can be replaced. If you are mechanicly inclined most repairs are fairly easy.
        Reasons to choose Five Star over Viking;
        Less expensive. New product and many people like going with the under dog Vs the corporate giant. Five star has a higher BTU max out put and lower BTU simmer on every burner.
        Both products are made in the USA.
        The BTU minimum I would look for is 15k. The Five star burners are 21k. The higher the BTU the more important a quality over head venting stystem is. This should ideally vent to the exterior of your home.

          I bake all the time and have a gas oven. I have absolutely no problems with even baking. If necessary I rotate pans halfway through baking and that works just fine. I'm in the process of looking for a new 30" range myself and I will definitely go all gas because I really dislike electric broilers.

            I agree. You have to be a serious baker to really appreciate an electric oven. Even with electric you will still need to rotate your pans. The only difference is that a gas regulator has a wider range of temperature as it cycles the gas on and off Vs the electric regulator. All this current marketing with the third element convection getting billed as "true" convection is really confusing a lot of people and it's nothing but tricky marketing. I can not recall ever seeing an electric convection oven in a commercial setting.

              My point is I am a serious, experienced baker and have absolutely no problem getting excellent results with my gas range.
