Review: Ivory Thailand

Ivory Thailand is located in the same place as the old Young Thailand on Church. It even has the same chef. Alas, the location and chef may be the same, but the food is not.

We had::

Mango salad: excellent. best dish of the meal and best version of the dish I've had anywhere .
Spring rolls: average
Beef salad: blah and gummy. Worst version of the dish I've had anywhere .
Ginger beef: Not even the slightest hint of ginger flavor. Absolutely tasteless.
Duck curry: Sauce was OK, but the duck was very tough.
BBQ: Ok, not great, not terrible.
Service: hovering and constantly trying to remove dishes, empty or not.

I don’t know where all the good reviews came from, but overall, the place not very good, maybe C-. I won’t be returning.

  1. While I agree with the service comment (and sometimes it's IMPOSSIBLE to get someone over to help) I must say that the duck curry is our (me and my SO) absolute favourite. Also, I looove their coconut rice and I have not had a bad dish there yet. Perhaps it was an off night for them? Ivory Thailand is my favourite Thai restaurant in the city...much, MUCH better than Golden Thai just up the street.

    1. Wow. I have to say I'm surprised. We've been to the lunch buffet numerous times and always found the food to be excellent, a lot better than most so-called "Thai" in the city. During buffet the service was always good, too, when you don't usually expect much. I had assumed the sit-down dinners would be better, not worse!

      Also, I'm pretty sure Ivory Thai is not the same chef as the old Young Thailand; there was an article in Eye magazine from last September detailing how chef Wanda Young had closed her three restaurants, including the Church location, and opened up a new one on Dundas West:

        Wasn't Ivory's owner Yupin Chatradit the head cook at Young Thailand on Church for many years?
