Vien Dong - Temporarily Closed
Vien Dong in Linda Vista is temporarily closed and word is that it will re-open as part of the 99 Ranch family. They are making renovations / changes and will open in 6-8 weeks. That's the gossip I heard, anyone hear different?

I just returned from the Truet Phat. The place was humming. The store layout is nearly identical to the old layout. It is much cleaner than before (yay!) although it still has that smell of fish on the side of the store with the fish tanks and fish counter.
They still have the huge seafood and butcher counters and the selection is great. The produce prices are quite a good value. After checkout a person at the exit will give you your choice of a free bag of rice, two 2 liter bottles of Pepsi cola, or another item that looked like a coffee beverage.
I can't wait to see what the take-out food counter will be like when they are done working on it.

The new Truet Phat supermarket opened on Saturday. I tried to visit it but the parking lot was completely filled and perhaps the most dangerous place to drive in Linda Vista. I will try to visit during a weekday this week in the hope that there will be fewer people during working hours.

I just saw a banner across the front of the storefront saying the new Truet Phat store will be opening on December 13th, a week from today. I'm eager to see what they've done with the place.

Anyone know if they're owned by these folks?

I spoke to the new owner (who also owns the nearby liquor store) about 3-4 weeks ago. At that time the store was in escrow and was clearly in transition...shelves weren't being restocked, perishables were less plentiful, and the owner was talking with suppliers and working his way through a big pile of paperwork. He said the store is NOT going to be a part of the 99 Ranch chain. He didn't mention a new name (and I neglected to ask). He said his first priority was to clean the place up and provide a grocery store with a wide range of foods to cater to the ethnic mix of the neighborhood. I made a mental note to check back in several weeks to see what was happening. Hopefully I'll get over that way in the next week or so to check on the progress.

Never mind...I found the review thread here:

Must check this out.
I drove by Vien Dong yesterday. The store is closed and the windows papered over. There are no signs posted to indicate when the storefront will reopen.

I swung by Vien Dong on LV Road the other day and there was some sort of clearance/closing down sale going on. It was a complete mess, tons of people running around with 2 shopping carts apiece, filled to the brims.
I didn't see any signage about how long it will be closed down for the presumed switchover.

a couple of updates:
Bale French Sandwiches is still open, but they said they are still moving down the street, to 6595 Linda Vista Road (it is the next block east, beside that drive thru taco shop.)
Vien Dong III - on LV Road next to Rite Aid and Bale sandwiches - is still open and has no signs up about closing.

Wow. Thanks for the tip. For my money that is not good news. I like 99 Ranch but Vien Dong had a better herb section, different fruits, and those exotic things like frog and turtle. Also, I will hate to lose the fun of the "bread-battle" after they put out their fresh bread. I also enjoyed jockeying for position. On the other hand it is closer to me than the Clairemont location.
Thanks again for the tip!
