Shrimp Trucks in Town (HNL)

Recently I've noticed a few shrimp trucks in Honolulu and I was wondering if any of them were any good. Locations I have noticed (or heard about) include:

Kalihi Kai, someplace off Kalihi St., makai of Nimitz

Kapiolani Blvd between Atkinson and Mahukona/Kaheka on the makai side of the street

Kapiolani Blvd at Kalakaua, in the parking lot on the mauka side of the street.

Kuhio Avenue, Waikiki (not quite sure where)

if anyone has any comments on any of these, or on any others, would love to hear about it.

  1. There was a thread, maybe six mos. back, about shrimp trucks in Honolulu. I do not recall much about it, and pretty much dismissed it. I should not have.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with any of these.

thanks Bill... I checked that thread out, some of it is still relevant, some is not. I may just have to do some field research.... what a sacrifice huh?

Someone has to "take one for the team... "

Let us know what you find,

    2. Both the one in Waikiki and the one on Kapiolani near Atkinson are "Blue Water Shrimp" or something like that. The one on Waikiki is on Kuhio near Launiu or Kaiolu in the empty lot. Haven't tried them yet, but been wanting to after a decent recommendation from a friend. She said it was pretty good, and a lot closer than the North Shore. If anyone checks it out, I'd love to hear as well.

      1. down...

I tried Blue Water Shrimp across from 24hr fitness in the big parking lot on Kapiolani. I got the garlic shrimp plate ($10.95) which came with 8 or 10 shirmp in a very tasty garlic cream sauce (I somehow lost count about half way through), along with a nice serving of salad greens with dressing, a small piece of garlic bread, and two scoops of rice also covered with the garlic cream sauce. It was certainly an adequate serving (and I easily finish a rainbow plate lunch) and I thought very tasty. The shrimp were deveined but not shelled, and cooked just right. I forgot to ask if they were local shrimp, and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between properly frozen and fresh shrimp.

In addition that day they offered crab cakes, steak, hamburger steak, and a couple other items. I was tempted, but had to get back to work, maybe next time. I understand that this is the same as the one on Kuhio in Waikiki, which I have had good reports on.

There are 2 or 3 lunchwagons across Kapiolani from Hard Rock Cafe, but none of them were shrimp trucks. I guess that leaves the one in Kalihi Kai to check out.
