Hi folks I'm new to chowhound so may be missing something obvious...but I haven't been able to find posts or threads that will help me find the best places to eat in Buenos Aires for non meateaters. We eat fish and shellfish but not meat or fowl... We are dedicated foodies who love to travel and explore places through our food experiences. I know Argentina is famous for it's meat so I'm a little concerned about finding great places with non meat choices. Thanks in advance for any advice or referrals.

There are plenty of non-meat choices here in BA. Though it has the reputation for its beef, that's not, by any stretch, all that's available here, especially given that you also eat fish and shellfish.

On the vegetarian side: Providencia in Palermo, Bio in Palermo, Casa Felix in Colegiales, Verdellama in Villa Crespo, Artemesia in Belgrano are all great, creative choices. There are also more casual places like Granix along Florida Street, Abuela Pan in San Telmo.

For fish - so many it would be hard to pick, but among my favorites - Jangada in Palermo (only place in town for fish from the Parana River Delta), Damblee in Once, Jose Luis in Recoleta.

If you click over to my blog I've got indexed restaurant reviews for the city.

I have been in Bs. Aires many times and, although I am a vegetarian, I can always find something to eat there. There are several options for non-meat eaters at most restaurants; however, I have to say that most of the food there is very heavy. Your choices are either meat or pastas. The pastas are good but they like to use creamy sauces, which makes them even heavier. Tomato based sauces are not that common. Buenos Aires does not have the variety of ethnic foods that the neighboring Santiago has, so your choices are again limited to meat or pasta. There is a good vegetarian restaurant downtown Bs. Aires, right off Florida blvd. called Granix. It has a good size buffet.

I will second Bio and Artemesia. My vegan friend visited while I was living in BA and those were her favorites. The latter is the better place for people who do eat meat, as they have nice fish. Take with a grain of salt, any recommendation of pizza. For some reason the Argentines are under the delusion that they know what coffee and pizza should taste like. Don't believe them!

You might also try Resto for the best modern cuisine I ever had in South America. They will almost certainly have a nice fish on the menu. Call in advance to confirm. If you like pasta, Social Paraiso does lunch as it should be done - rich pasta and good wine.
