Scottsdale Bakery and Cupcake Company

I stopped by this new bakery a couple of months ago, but I forgot to write about it. It's located on Northsight in the center next to Home Depot. The shop itself is pretty large, and they have two party rooms (I guess for birthday parties).

I first tasted their cupcakes at a school fundraiser (they donated the cupcakes), so I thought I'd give them a try for real. We ordered a dozen cupcakes for a dinner party. They have a ton of flavors and most everyone thought they were delicious. I'm not a cupcake afficianado, and I usually think a ton of icing is too sweet, but these cupcakes were pretty good. The cake may be a bit dry, though, but at least I wasn't overwhelmed with sweetness and richness that makes taking more than one bite tough.

I'd be interested if anyone else has tried this place yet, and if so, how the cupcakes compare to other bakeries. The cost is only $2.50 per, which seems to be less expensive than some other places.

The owners say they come from generations of prize winning bakers and cooks, and the folks we met were very nice.

  1. Barry,

I noticed the bakery for the first time this week! I can't wait to give them a try! I am always looking for something sweet to bring my customers! What else do they have besides cupcakes?

They have cakes of all different flavors including what they call specialty cakes. I get the impression they'll do just about anything you ask for. They also have a muffins, cinamon rolls, brownies, bars, pies, cookies and cheese cakes. Let me know what you think.

        Will do!
Could go for a cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee right now as it is chilly and rainy outside!

    2. I just checked out their website and wow, they have a great assortment of flavors! I'm going to stop by there at lunch today and pick up a selection. I'll post back after our cupcake tasting tonight. I'd love to get over to Sprinkles b/c their flavors sounds great, too, but I don't get to that area very often (and, frankly, I don't want to have to wait in a huge line!) and Scottsdale Cupcakes & Bakery is just down the street from my house.

Just fyi... I went to Sprinkles last week (around 1:30 on Thursday), and had no line. I was in and out in less than five minutes. I tried the carrot and the vanilla milk chocolate. Both were excellent. Definitely the best bakery cupcakes I have had. And now I look forward to trying the cinnamon roll and maybe a pie from Scottsdale Bakery!

I just wanted to report back on my experience now that we've tried half a dozen flavors. We had the german chocolate (DH proclaimed it very good, although the frosting:cake ratio was 2:1), carrot (good but a little dry); peanut butter (chocolate cupcake w/ peanut butter frosting -- again, the cake was a little dry but the frosting was good); chocolate mint (chocolate cupcake w/ chocolate mint frosting - my favorite, the frosting was really good!); latte (coffee flavored cupcake and frosting -- both flavorless, and the cupcake was dry); and sophie (looked like the old fashioned Hostess cupcake - chocolate cupcake w/ white cream filling, topped w/ chocolate frosting and white squiggles -- pretty good).

All in all, we were more pleased than displeased, and I'd try them again. btw, they had cookies and muffins when I was there, but no pies.

          1. re: mdepsmom

Sorry about there not being pies. I could have sworn I saw some, but maybe not. I agree with you about the cake dryness. I had a few Sprinkles cupcakes recently, and I thought there cake was better. It's a nice family owned place, though, and I enjoyed what we had. Thanks for reporting back.

            1. re: barry

no worries re the pies - I wouldn't have bought one anyway! I only noticed that there weren't any since you mentioned that they had them.

          2. re: mdepsmom

I also tried Sprinkles and have been there 3 times with no line, not even another person there. I like the banana cupcake. The rest are too sweet for me and I don't like sprinkoles on my cupcakes. Yesterday I was at the Scottsdale Bakery and Cupcake Company to get a free pass to a movie. Got them and was excited. Got a dozen cupcakes assorted and I won't be going back to Spinkles as these are much better and did not have any that were dry. They have only been open a few months so maybe they went through some growing pains. The peanut butter and chocolate cupcakes really rocked. I live up north and will be going there often!!

          3. I tried that bakery also and love it! They cupcakes are the best. Mine was cold when I got it, that may be the reason for the dryness. Overall, they had a great selection of flavors and the cupcakes were delish! I love the way their shop is decorated, very cute party rooms for little kids. It looked like there were big murals painted on the walls and the tables were nicely decorated.
I tried some of their frosted cookies and they were also very good. I didn't see pies, but they did have cinnamon rolls, brownies and a few other bars to choose from.
The Junior Mint cupcake was my favorite, my husband liked the lemon one.

            1. I LOVE the cupcakes here! Always fresh, great varieties, and I must say, they are the best in the area! However, I do not like their iced cookies--Barb's still takes the prize for them!
