Dixie Beer in Birmingham
Does anybody know where I can get Dixie Beer in town? Or know of any store that can order it? I see Abita all the time, but my husband prefers Dixie with crawfish.
Best bets: Vulcan Beverage on 8th Ave N or The Diplomat Deli on U.S. 31 in Vestavia HIlls. Remote chance: The Western in Mountain Brook Village or The Piggly Wiggly in Homewood on U.S. 31. Good luck.
Is Dixie still being produced? I can't recall seeing any recently, not even during Jazzfest this year. Then again, it's not a favorite so maybe I just didn't notice it in NOLA.
You might want to call the local NOLA-style restaurants to see if they stock it and/or if they might be able to order you a few cases.
The brewery, on Tulane Ave., was heavily flooded with Katrina. When we were down in March, it still looked empty, but that does not mean that they have not moved the operation elsewhere.
If you have a Cost-Plus World Market, you might have a look. We needed some for a New Orleans themed party, and I picked up a few cases of Blackened Voodoo and Crimson Voodoo there - this was in Phoenix.
"To mark the occasion of the brewery's 100th anniversary of October 31, 2007, and to draw attention to the brewery's plight, Joe and Kendra hosted a Halloween party at the brewery attended by former employees, Dixie friends and distribution accounts, and a gaggle of media from around the country. The Brunos’ plans for the brewery include a smaller brewhouse and a beer garden on the roof to take advantage of the fabulous view of the New Orleans skyline.
"Meanwhile, brewing of the Dixie beers is being accomplished at the Huber Brewery in Monroe, Wis., under the supervision of continuing Brewmaster Kevin Stuart, who has been employed by Dixie since 1987. The new Dixie beers are being distributed by Distinguished Brands International out of Littleton, Colo."
