Fun for the frugal-minded – freezing cabbage and making powdered milk butter

The Los Angeles Times had an article about how websites offering money-saving tips are enjoying popularity in the current economic climate.

Thiftyfun tells you how to freeze cabbage and has other tips for cooking and dining out on a dime. I picked up what seems like a great source for saving bucks on dining out … Restaurants.com ... where you can buy discount restaurant gift certificates ($25 certificate for $10 … $100 for $40).

Another dining out tip was how to make the McDonalds Asian chicken salad on the cheap - $2 … from the dollar menu order side salad with ginger dressing packet and the 5 piece Mcnuggets. Top greens with quartered nuggets, drizzle with dressing … voila.

Helpful Housewife takes a lot to read and there’s a whole religious thing going on. However, with patience you can glean how to make your own pancake syrup “sugar, water, a couple tbsp of brown sugar, some maple extract and a bit of butter extract as well”

Hillbilly Housewife is the usual budget stretching recipes (chili, mac and cheese, etc) plus other food tips.

There’s a whole primer about using powdered milk and making it taste better (add a little vanilla). I learned stuff about powdered milk I never knew … there are two types … Instant Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder and Regular Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder ("Non-Instant"). The latter can be found according to the site at ethnic markets.

The trouble with money-saving food tips, is that they seem to involve to eating pasta, potatoes, and other such things. I believe you can also save bucks while eating the best … so here’s a thread about that.

  1. Why would you need to freeze cabbage unless you are growing lots of it? In which case, why not sell them at the farmer's market? Cabbage is not that expensive at the supermarket, and it tends to last a while in the refrigerator.
