Brown Rice Sushi in SFV???
I'm sorry that I'm not very familiar with valley recs but the one place that I know of that exclusively does brown rice sushi is Shima on Abbot Kinney in Venice. Yoshi-san has the potential to be a great itamae - he is relatively young, mills his own rice, makes his own tofu, is a real stickler for the quality of his seafood, and loves to do his own interpretation of various seafood dishes. The resto is fronted by an orange plywood fence with just an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper with the resto's name on it. The plywood bar is broad and simple, and the space has a great well-appointed modern interior that feels like he grooves the California lifestyle. The somewhat individualistic quirkiness works on Abbot Kinney. It's not a party atmosphere in there - it's all about the food - and Yoshi-san will do his best with what he feels is the best available at that time. It seems you either love this place - the quality is hard to beat - or you find it lacking - the portion sizes - but I think most will agree that Shima is on the expensive side. We've dropped a C-note per here and still felt wanting afterwards. And probably one of my favorites there is one of the least expensive items - his tofu - about six bucks if I recall. It's dinner-only and parking at that time on and around Abbot Kinney can be a b*#+ch...
