Ruth Chris's-Calgary

At the request of my father, my sister and I took our father for his birthday dinner to Ruth Chris's for dinner on Saturday night and we came away not particularily impressed...especially at the prices they are charging.
It would certainly not have been my first choice but the old boy likes his meat and potatoes and so off we went.
To start with, they have done a pretty good job with the decor especially incorporating the fact they are at the base of the Calgary Tower. The service was disappointing in that our waiter was either too disorganized or had too many tables in that he wasn't particularily attentive.
As for the food, they have quite a good looking steakhouse menu with a lot of the usual suspects and with an ode to the franchise's origins, a number of New Orlean's inspired dishes.
For starters, my sister and father shared an iceberg lettuce wedge with blue cheese dressing which they enjoyed and I had their Atlantic Smoked Salmon which was also pretty good.
With respect to the mains, both my father and sister ordered the petit fillet and I ordered the bone-in ribeye. We also shared an order of asparagus with hollandaise sauce and some shoe-string potatoes.
Firstly, the arrival of the mains was not terribly quick which was a bit annoying and then when they arrived (on sizzling plates which I thought was rather peculiar) my steak was overcooked and my sister's steak was undercooked. For me that is the kiss of death for any steakhouse...it is hard to fathom how that can happen in a high-end restaurant let alone one that supposedly specilaizes in steaks.
Anyway, we sent them back and after a wait we received new steaks and they were the desired doneness. Although, I must say they were quite tasty their screwup left us somewhat annoyed.
To their credit, they offered complimentary port with our desserts which were all pretty good.
All in all, our experience was not very stellar and coupled with the high prices we will not be making a return visit.

    2. Totally agree with you about Ruth's Chris. The sizzling plates made my steak a bit over cooked as well. We went as a party of 9, and the person sitting next to me had a steak that was almost well-done when she ordered rare...
      We ordered a huge assortment of appitizers and side dishes, none of them too memorable except the ahi hi tuna, which I though was super. I usually avoid tuna, but theirs was really fresh. I was really dissapointed by the crab cakes though, I had heard a lot about them, but they weren't really all that great - we had trouble finishing them. The service was okay, not great, it really seemed like they were new servers (labor crunch and all...) but for the prices, we expected more.
