Let's hear it Chowhounds, who makes the best bread in the Washington area? Any variety from any culinary tradition counts.

For sandwiches, I love the rosemary bread at Harris Teeter, it makes the best turkey sandwiches.

I can't tell you how happy I am that I live near Grape + Bean in Old Town, where they sell breads from Restaurant Eve. The ciabatta and olive are sublime.

I like the bread at the Penn Quarter Farmer's Market. It's a bit pricey, but they have a wide variety of flavors--both savory and sweet. Their brioche (aka challah) is a richer, denser consistency than I'm used to with traditional challah, but it's delicious and makes a wonderful french toast on the weekend.

You should do a search because I'm almost positive there is a great thread that already exists on this topic.

I am nominating Randolph Pastries for croissants that are most comparable to the ones I love when traveling in France.

Bonaparte Breads has some really nice varities. They are based in Maryland but can be found at most local farmer's markets in the NOVA/DC area.

Also, Heidelberg bakery in Arlington/Falls Church area is also nice.
