The Indian scene in nassau county, especially Hicksville, is unbelievably volatile...the fastest-changing scene I've seen. So this info's probably only good for a month or so, but fwiw Heritage of India is the class act right now. 2024 Hillside Ave, New Hyde Park.

Very nice upscale place, interesting menu. Good lunch specials. Spacey service. Owner's a good guy.

I could not agree more and have regularly recommended the joint on chowhound. The interior is virtually unchanged from its previous incarnation as an Italian restaurant, they placed a few "Indian Chotchkas" around but kept the same interior. I like the food alot, reliable and tasty. I have spoken to the owner/Maitre de a few times and he has co-owned and been a consultant in a ton of places in the New York area. He seems to have a great deal of experience and knows about customer service. I am familiar with your view of the quick changes that take place in the restaurant scene but this place has been consistently good for a few years. On another note, great to see you posting on the local boards, please keep it up and if you can, try Nanking just down the block from Heritage.

I neglected to specify some dishes. I'd single out for killerness the murgh acchari kebab, chicken marinated in pickles and yogurt and barbecued. So tender, so aromatic. The onion kulcha is absolutely ridiculous. Goat dopiaza is classical and very intense (though more bone than meat). Everything advertising saffron actually does have saffron, especially the exquisite rice pudding.

Also, fwiw, it's a "nice" place. Good prices on lunch specials though. And I think there's a Sunday buffet.

My boyfriend and I tried Heritage last night. We typically go to Santoor in Glen Oaks (which never disappoints) but had heard through the grapevine that Heritige was pretty fantastic and thus decided to give it a shot. The first thing we noticed was that the waiter was not only not particularly friendly, but that he took a good 20 minutes to come to our table and take our order. (this was odd since there were only 3 other tables occupied in the restaurant.) Eventually when he did take our order, I'd say we were waiting for our food to arrive for a good 45 minutes. When the food did get to the table, it was NOT what we had ordered. Because he did not once come to our table to ask if everything was okay, we had to flag him down like a cab during rush our traffic in midtown during a thunder storm to tell him that we received the wrong food. HE insisted it WAS what we had ordered and because we were starving and didn't feel like waiting for antoher hour, we ate it. One of the entrees (the chicken Mahkni despite the fact that we had ordered Korma) was good and the other dish (something the waiter CLAIMED was vindaloo but did not resemble vidaloo in any way shape or form) was sub par. The raita (which we had ordered but had to remind the waiter several times to bring) tasted rancid as if it had turned and the rice was bland and contained no flavor whatsoever. After the waiter took our plates, we waited another 30 minutes until he finally brought the check and we could not get the hell out of that place fast enough. I can honestly say in my entire life I had NEVER not tipped in a restaurant until last night.

Sounds like the service has remained the same over the past year but the food has not. I'll try Santoor!

As for the insistence you'd ordered it as he brought it, see this new thread I've started:

HAHA! Good thread. I wish I could help but alas I am also at a loss in those situations. It's so awkward and I tend to become overly polite as a compensatory strategy.
