Casual Seafood between Point Judith and Bristol RI

I am currently living in Minneapolis but grew up in Rhode Island. Good New England seafood is impossible in the upper Midwest! I will be going home this weekend and will be spending an afternoon in Point Judith before heading to my parent's place in Bristol, RI. Was planning on stopping for dinner somewhere between Point Judith and Bristol. I am looking for a casual seafood restaurant (read: fried seafood) that serves good fried clams and/or good fish and chips (cod). My standard for the type of place I am looking for is Davey's Locker in New Bedford - Hearty portions, great and fresh fried clams and fish, reasonable price, decent restaurant atmosphere. Reading through some other threads, I am considering Champlains in Galilee (never been), or Flo's Clam Shack (driven by a million times, never been). Would prefer restaurant to "shack" if possible. Other suggestions between these two location (so middletown /portsmouth /newpor t/jamestown/etc would all be fine) are welcome. What would you suggest that would best fit the bill? I know it isn't gourmet, but it sure will be a fine welcome home after a long Minnesota winter!

I would suggest The Back Eddy in Westport, MA. Nice location with a great view and very good seafood too.

Evelyn's came out on top, by a mile, in my personal chowder quest last summer.
Aidan's in Bristol does a fine fish and chips.

George's in Galilee is horrid....bad food, and the place is dirty. It's been horrid as long as I've known the place (my sister waitressed there the summer of 1973, so we're talking a lot of years).

I have always loved Champlin's but I haven't been in probably 2 yrs now, so I don't know if anything's changed.

I've always heard good things about Evelyn's & Quito's but never tried either.

A bit outside your specified area.....Jim's Dock in Jerusalem (just past East Matunuck State Beach) is one of my favorite places.....oddly, I've never ordered fried seafood there. I like to go for breakfast. It's the location that makes it.....you're sitting on a dock overlooking the fishing fleet of Galilee (you're right across the channel)....there's nothing like sitting there in early morning w/a hot coffee and a plate of blueberry pancakes.

Wow - Evelyn's menu looks great. Very extensive menu, and all the required items. That may be the place to try! I particularly like that many of the descriptions begin with "A hearty portion of..." Sounds like my kind of place.

I live in Boston and still make trips to Evelyn's for a lobster roll, clam cakes and a chop suey sandwich!

Hey BZ -- Evelyn's looks super. Do you have any other recs for this kind of place in that area? I'll be staying in Middletown and cannot bear being dragged to Flo's again. I think it's the Woodman's of Newport. N'est ce pas?

Oof, c'est vrai...Middletown is a culinary no-man's-land. Not really close to anything chowish - you'd fare best by heading north (Bristol to the aforementioned Quito's) or north (maybe to Jamestown - head to Tricia's. It's not the most earth-shattering food, but a fun scene in the tiki bar. Definitely stop by Village Hearth for pizza night or for some loaves of anything for munching at the beach). Evelyn's in Tiverton is definitely a bit of a trek from Middletown (at least by RI standards). It's a pretty drive, though.

My parents recently had good wedding food at Atlantic Beach Club in Middletown, which shocked them. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks digga -- yeah, I've been doing the Rhode Island July 4th thing for a few years and I concur about Middletown. We usually get fish and cook at home but I am always dying for a place to go out when we don't feel like cooking. These suggestions are very welcome, thanks.

i went to evelyn's last week, and it was really good. fried clams were excellent...and if you do go up all that way, you can follow up your seafood with an ice cream at gray's, which isn't all that far away:

hey passing! thanks for the info. I realize that Rhode Islanders don't tend to drive far, but it seems that Evelyn's would be worth the schlepp.

TDS1, if it matters to you, Evelyn's is BYOB as well. Make sure you get there outside of usual lunch hours and nab an outdoor seat. High noon is nuts there.
