SF hounds heading to NYC for very short visit. Of the two places where would you recommend for great Italian? We will be staying in Chelsea so either is relatively close.

  1. Scarpetta has just opened, so I don't think you'll get many reviews. From the chef's history and the press I've read, I think it'll be very different from Da Andrea--more refined food, less rustic environment. Da Andrea is a good neighborhood spot, but I'm not sure it's worth going out of your way for. I like Crispo better in the area.

scarpetta opened yesterday so yr not going to get much info yet. conant does excellent work with high end italian but im assuming theyll have initial service issues...who knows.

that said, da andrea is much more casual than conant's previous places alto and l'impero. as i post about them often enough, da andrea is probably the italian place i eat at more than any other. the food is absolutely delicious, the service is great, and the place filled with friendly people. i like da andrea better than crispo by far.

    2. I don't think you can compare, it's low-end versus high-end. I'm sure Scarpetta will be in a very different price and (one would hope) quality range. I prefer Crispo to Da Andrea, though Da Andrea is very good value.

      1. I would not recommend Da Andrea.

Da Andrea is fine if you're in the hood and want a nice simple Italian dinner. I like it, and I can assert I've never had a bad meal there. But it's just a simple, local spot for which I wouldn't go too far out of my way.
