Made the mistake of finally taking my wife here the other night. Had not been in many years and on a whim we went. I can't remember if anyone included them in the recent "Dive Bars" thread, but they should have been...or maybe a whole new catagory..."Dive Restaurants & Bars".

The food was edible, just. The halibut special for me, with some of the most acidic and lemony tasting tomato sauce with capers it has ever been my displeasure to find on a plate. My wife had the veal chop, which was better. I had forgotten to warn her about the scalloped potatoes containing bananas, so when she had her first taste it was an immediate switch to a baked potato. I had a Sierra Nevada beer, which seemed a little watered down to me, the soup was definitely watery and the check came to $48, plus tip. The booth seat was dirty and that is the final visit for me. Rand needs to go ahead and build there as soon as possible.

I dread each time my inlaws insist that we take them there for prime rib. It's stringy and usually overcooked. No bargain. They pour a decent martini, though.

I had a perfectly good steak the one time I ate there.

My wife once went with her brother. They looked at each other over dinner and said, probably in unison, "this is the sort of thing mother could have made."

She will not be returning.

I can only speak for myself, obviously.

I eat only one thing when I go to Chez Jay and I'm always happy. I get the sand dabs. They are fine. The potatoes with the banana overlay are odd, i keep it simjple. I like the sand dabs. I don't remember ifthey have green goddess dressing. If they do, I get it and enjoy it on the salad.

I asked the guy who took our order about what to get between the sand dabs, (which I like a lot and normally order when they are on the menu) and the halibut special. That's what I get for not going with my first instinct.
