Best Chilaquiles in LA

  • t

I moved down from SF and loved the chilaquiles served by the Primavera food stall at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market on Saturdays. Is there anything similar or can someone recommend good chilaquiles in LA?

  1. I don't know where you are located, but the best ones are at La Casita Mexicana, on Gage, in Bell. You can get it with different sauces, absolutely delicious. During the week they only serve it til noon, not sure of the weekends. The food is absolutely delicious and they make their own tortillas.

    1. My favorites are Pepy's Galley in Mar Vista (the gold standard in my book!) and then the guys at the Saturday morning Farmer's Market on Pico in Santa Monica.

Pepys rules! Order the Chilaquilles and the Machaca, share with a couple friends and you have an EPIC Mexican breakfast....

I agree with Pepy's Galley! They are my favorite so far.

        2. La Casita's the best I've had to date. Been meaning to try Pepy's some day. Believe it or not, the cafeteria in the Kaiser Imperial outpatient clinic (corner of Imperial & Bellflower Bl in Downey) has great chilaquiles too (only avail Fri mornings).

          1. For an upscale Chilaquiles experience, do try brunch at Jar. They probably are far from authentic, but very tasty none the less.

Also not the most authentic, but very tasty are the chilaquiles on the brunch menu at Cha Cha Cha, on Virgil and Melrose.

            2. Thank you all! I'll give them all a try!

                1. My favorite is El Matador in Irwindale on Irwindale (I sometimes order it with chorizo but ALWAYS get the eggs cooked over-easy on top). Can get it with either the red or green sauce - I prefer the red.
Had a pretty good version at Rigo's (?) Mexican on Foothill in Arcadia on Friday (east of 2nd, I know for sure). Theirs is not as saucy as other versions and they cut the chips down to "get in your mouth" size, which I appreciated. There is another Mexican restaurant in the vicinity that I will need to try as well.

                  1. In addition to the ones mentioned, I love the ones at Gilbert's El Indio.

                    1. Try Cafe Cordova in Pasadena on Cordova and Los Robles in an office bldg....only on Thursday mornings. The best chilaquiles I've ever had and his hot salsa is to die for also!
