Looking for 50s recipe for "stockade roast"

I once saw a picture in a vintage magazine of something called a "Stockade Roast," a marvelous construction of a hot dog "stockade" erected around a kind of meatloaf. It was decorated with pimiento-stuffed green olives, and I seem to recall it as a postwar recipe. Does anyone know of a recipe for this dish? It is for a theme party. Thanks in advance!

The Greatest Generation. Except maybe for some recipes. ;-)

Alas, MSPD, these lovely 'furter crown moulds may be all we have left of the glory days. The "Stockade Roast" has a sort of Lincoln Log arrangement of franks; they actually build up around the "roast" or meatloaf, and protect it like a fortress--an edible Alamo if you will, or a "Frank Fort." I am a scholar with some research capability, but this has put me to shame! Thanks all, Suzanne.

My guess is it was something dreamed up by the magazine's staff. I remember the 50s well, but have never heard of it. But it does sound like something you could recreate from memory, but if you go that route, just remember: In the fifties, most hotdogs/weiners were natural casings and tasted good! Can't say as much for most of today's frankfurters.

Yeah...this is one of the few times I can't instantly find something on the internet. I'm stumped.

I am going to go ahead and build the dish from my memory of that garish spread in the vintage mag. Gotta love those unearthly colors.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. And for that first "Crown Roast" photo, MSPD, which should come with an NC17-rating. BTW, there was a recipe on that site for chopped hot dogs in "aspic..." {shiver]

It's a wonder this "obesity epidemic" everyone's talking about didn't start sooner.

I saw that site. I sincerely hope nobody tried that horrible thing.
It looked so sad and cold in the aspic...yuck.

I suddenly remember another amazing recipe I came across several years ago. It consisted of a deep bowl of baked beans (canned ones, of course) into which one inserted frankfurters standing up vertically. It was recommended for occasions which involved men watching sports on TV. I suppose after which they go to a club for some lap dancing.

I fail to see a flaw in that kind of itinerary.

So you've served that, have you?

                          1. re: Nyleve
