Duck legs - where can I buy them (MetroWest)?

I used to be able to get packaged fresh duck legs and breasts but lately I can't find any. I'm in the Hudson/Maynard area so I realize I'm living in a culinary wasteland, but I used to see them occasionally at Hannaford and Whole Foods. No more. Is there some kind of a problem with carrying fresh duck or am I just out of luck unless I venture inside 128?

When I lived in Bedford, if Whole Foods didn't have any I was often able to find them at the Stop & Shop.

You can order duck legs from www.dartagnan.com. I have bought magret duck breasts at Wilson Farms, but don't recall seeing legs there. I'm going there for Wagyu burgers this week. I will check.

I was at the Whole Foods in Wayland (on route 20, near the 27 junction) last night and they had duck legs in the shelved section near the meat counter. Just FYI!

Thanks. Good to know I'm not alone! I rarely find myself inside 128 so I'm hoping to find a place that carries them out my way. But I'll keep Wilson Farms in mind, that's occasionally a neighborhood I might be passing through and it would be worth a stop.

Are there any other "farmstands" like Wilson's (Verrill?) out your way that also carry meat?

Also, check out where Maple Leaf Farms' duck is sold - do you have a BJ's Wholesale Club near you? I also buy duck breasts there as well.

And there are also various turkey farms that sell duck:

http://www.mass.gov/agr/massgrown/tur... - Do a "find" for duck, and a place in South Hadley and Needham Heights also sell duck.

What about Wilson Farms in Lexington? I often buy duck breasts there; don't recall seeing duck legs, but I know they have whole ducks as well. Can't hurt to call and request duck legs if they don't normally carry them.

I used to buy duck legs and breasts at several WF around Boston, when I couldn't find them I was told at the Washington Ave store that they'd been discontinued. but then I saw some at the River St store and was told that they sometimes have them. Haven't seen any at the Beacon Street store for a while. If you'll be in town I've also duck breasts (two types - Pekin and Muscovy) and legs at Savenors. Since they've become difficult to find I now have several pkgs frozen away, they're great seasoned with garam masala and roasted.

i get them at Super 88 in Brighton - Trader Joe's often carries duck breasts but I have only seen the legs at Super 88

My local Stop and Shop in Watertown has them usually. Not always, though. They're individually shrink wrapped and $5.99/lb. They used to be cheaper...

What Trader Joe"s do you shop at. I use to buy them there but have not seen them in years.

i shop at the one in brookline, but i haven't bought looked for duck breast there for a couple of months, They used to carry muscovy breasts. I did buy the legs at Super 88 in brighton about two months ago and assume they still have them.

Can you ask at Whole Foods? You probably could request a few to be delivered, for pickup - its not like you are asking for platypus or something

That is odd - I see them all the time at the Whole Foods in Brighton. Maybe they just weren't selling enough in your area to bother keeping them in stock. But as Grant suggests, they would almost certainly order some in for you if you ask.

It has been about a year or so since Whole Foods had them last... they discontinued them because the company they were buying from was actually a foie gras outfit, selling legs and breasts as a side venture. As went the city of Chicago, so went Whole Foods in banning foie of all sorts, so even the duck farms that specialize in foie were out. Now you can only find whole ducks from Bell & Evans at WFM, which are nice but not quite as meaty as the plump, foie-fattened birds of the former purveyor. Sad. They used to sell legs for $4.50 or so for a pack of 2, so it was completely reasonable to buy them there for confit/rillettes. No more :(

Chicago has repealed the fois gras ban so maybe we'll be seeing those duck legs again:
