red italian dressing
I have been looking forever for a specific italian dressing recipe. It's a vinaigrette, VERY orange-y red, very strong flavors, very tangy, lots of oregano but that's all I can figure out. I'm pretty sure it's not just red wine vinegar that makes it red, since red wine vinegar looks more pink. I have had it at a few small mom and pop restaurants over the years, which makes me think it is a common recipe. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Could it be ajvar mixed with oil and vinegar? There's likely to be red pepper flesh puree in that dressing if you say it's 'orange-y red' and 'tangy'. See ajvar pic in this reply.
The other thing it could be is that they use a *red* pepper infused oil in their dressing. (That particular flavored oil often times takes on an almost orange color).

Possibly. My grocery store used to sell it in the deli and then the place closed down-and in the little containers, whatever made it red settles at the bottom quite a bit. I will check it out, thank you!

I just realized that it could be pimento also. That's possible.

would this be a recipe from Serrantos? An italian joint in the phoenix metro that shut down? I have a recipe (for bulk) but haven't tried it out yet.. it may be missing a key ingredient but basically it's a home made italian with pizza sauce on it. We got the recipe from a waitress before moving to OH in the 80s. If this is what you are seeking then email me at my yahoo account.

If it's very tangy, it could have citrus in it. Possibly blood orange, which would account for the color and would go really well with oregano.

Here's a picture of blood orange vinaigrette that I found online. You can do a quick google search to turn up lots of different recipes.

Don't know if you're still looking (3 1/2 years later) but if you are, try doing a search on "Red Pepper Vinaigrette". There are recipes from Rachel Ray and others out there.
