Fabian Seafood Lawrence KS (Topeka, and other cities as well)
I lined up in the chill wind yesterday to buy a red snapper and some shrimp at the Raco car wash on Iowa. Boy, was it worth the wait! Mom feasted on a spicy shrimp with squash over rice with currants and almonds tonight. She was happy. Last night I fixed her roasted whole snapper with za'atar and olive oil (inspired by recipe at epicurious) and we finished off a bottle of wine with it. It's been a good weekend! http://www.fabianseafood.com/ Be sure to sign up on the mailing list. Thanks to Katie Nell for the heads up.

What is the pricing like?

I've been buying from Fabian Seafood for about 10 years here in Northern Illinois. They come to the Naperville Farmer's Market pretty much bi-weekly from about April to October. At times they have done runs just before Thanksgiving and bring oysters, snapper and crab. Generally it's shrimp and crab meat and only every now and then with whole snapper. I haven't been this season yet but shrimp ranges $15 to $17 depending on size. Whole snapper was $9 for the whole (not per pound). Their quality is excellant, the x-large shrimp are huge and meaty.

Glad you were able to make your mom such a tasty meal! Just for clarification, are they now selling in Topeka as well? The funny thing is, I've never actually been, but my parents pick us up stuff a lot when they go- I'm a lucky daughter!

Well, I'm not for sure, because when I was in Lawrence, there was someone in line who said she lived between Topeka and Lawrence, and had come to Lawrence, implying they weren't going to Topeka at present. Probably the best thing is to get on the mailing list and ask in the comments box.
TDS1, snapper in Lawrence was $8.80 per pound, and he gave me a little discount of .20 per pound. Our snapper weighed about 2 1/4 pounds. Shrimp topped out at $13.something per pound for 16/20s, but he was selling the smaller ones for as little as $8.00/lb. when someone bought in quantity. (There was a woman in front of me who bought 17 pounds, but I don't recall exactly the piece per pound of her order.) Their pricing must vary by region, but I don't see a consistent trend compared to LikestoEatout's pricing in No. Illinois? Hmmm...

FWIW, I've eaten their various shrimp a handful of times, no problem. But I ate some of their picked crab last time and got sicker than a dog. The top of the tin was fine, but by the time I got near the bottom, I realized from the ammonia taste that I was in trouble.

Oh, wow, that's awful. Thanks for sharing so none of us have to go through it.

This happens very rarely. It may have been a damaged lid/container. If you ever have a problem with our products. Just let us know... We will be happy to replace it or give a refund.

I've been buying Steve's shrimp, crab, crayfish, oysters, and snapper for years. Always great, and worth standing in line for.
