Bastide since Manzke left?

Has anyone dined at Bastide since the chef and presumably his wife (desert chef) left? If so, how was it?

  1. When did Walter leave? We were there a couple of weeks ago and he came out of the kitchen to speak with us. Does anyone know the reason?

        damn it so he actually did leave...i was thinking of going there in a few weeks

          Damn it!!!! I have been waiting for the right opportunity to visit there and was on my short list of restaurants to try. Now, i don't know if I want to go anymore until i hear otherwise. I'm really bummed. There was a long article on LA Magazine about Bastide some time ago and it hinted not so subtly that Joe Pytka is not an easy man to work for. I'm actually not that surprised that Manske left.

      2. Oh come on! I went 2 months ago and it was WONDERFUL. I thought it was a place I could count on for a really great, high-end meal. Now it's back in limbo.

        1. Thank you for posting this. Fantastic timing, as I was just about to make a reservation for my second visit to Bastide, my first having been one of my top two dining experiences, anywhere. I suppose this could be construed as an invitation to try it new again, but I don't think I'm up to it. Perhaps I'll finally visit Spago instead.

          This Shoemaker fellow had better be golden, because Bastide was fantastic in every respect. I thought it could be a solid for at least one Michelin star next year. I will be very eager to try Walter Manzke's next restaurant, hopefully in LA as his interview indicates.

            Paul Shoemaker is GOLDEN and has made some of the most memorable meals we've had at Providence when he was Chef de Cuisine there until a year ago.

                concur. paul shoemaker is a great chef and he'll crank it at BASTIDE. i hope walter and marge don't leave los angeles, though. they are really a breath of fresh air.

                    so manzke ended up at Anisette Brasserie...anyone been?

                    also has anyone been to Bastide since shoemaker took over?

                      Not unless Manzke is joining Bastide's original chef there. Anisette is Alain Giraud's restaurant--and it is terrific! A gorgeous, two-story brasserie with home-made pastries, an interesting wine list and wonderful food. Currently just open for breakfast and lunch, they hope to serve dinner starting next Monday
