Planning a fall wedding in Lake Region of Italy

Any suggestions for a restaurant with great Northern italian atmosphere - fabulous food and wine - not too fancy or formal - but with a terrace that couuld accomodate 20-30 people overlooking one of the lakes?

We did not try the Hotel du Lac so I can't compare the food, but I will say that the dinners we had at Silvio were excellent from appetizers to dessert. The lasagne with fish ragu (made from crepes instead of noodles) was memorable, and in addition to all the delicious lake fish, the beef tenderloin with green peppercorn sauce was especially delicious. The restaurant seemed to be very popular with locals, too.

I think another thing to consider is which would be more convenient for you if you will also be staying in Bellagio. The du Lac is in the center of town, which is useful if you or your guests don't have cars, annoying if you do. The Silvio is good if you have a car, with free parking, but if you have to walk into town it involves a narrow, busy road or a garden that you have to pay to walk through. The rooms at Silvio are considerably cheaper. Hope this will help you sort things out.

I just returned from getting married in Varenna in Lake Como and posted about our wedding dinner at Hotel du Lac in Bellagio (search my posts to read about it...). We couldn't decide between du Lac and Silvio and we were so pleased to have chosen du Lac. Silvio is beautiful, but I was not terribly impressed with the food. Hotel du Lac could definitely accommodates 20-30 people, and for us it was such a bargain at 40 EURO a head with wonderful attention.

Let me know if I can help with anything else!

How about being on an Island in the lake??

We stayed at Hotel Verbano on Isola dei Pescatori in the middle of Lake Maggiore. It was magical!! I believe it is the only inn on the tiny Island and after the day tourists leave, you have the Island to yourselves, guests of the hotel (only 12 rooms) and Italian residents.

Their Albergo Ristorante was wonderful # with beautiful terrace. I'm sure it would be a great event. You access it via a short ferry ride from Stresa where other guests could stay.

A truly magical venue with outstanding views and cuisine.

        Good luck!

Look into the Albergo Silvio on the outskirts of Bellagio. It's a family-run hotel and restaurant, very popular with locals, and the food is wonderful. They catch the fish themselves in the lake. There is a large outdoor terrace and a glass-enclosed part. Prices are moderate, very good value. The hotel rooms are small but comfortable, and the views over Lake Como are to die for.

thank you! I've read much about Albergo Silvio - seems t be a very popular place and all the reviews are great. We'll definitely check it out.

            Have you been?

Yes, we stayed there for 3 days in September, 2005. We ate dinner there 2 of the 3 nights. I place it among the most enjoyable places we have been to in Europe.
