Bistro Bis Review
Hello, DC hounds!
Being a recent transplant to D.C. from Manhattan, I am very pleased to say that I have had nothing but good experiences with the restaurant scene thus far. Remaining consistant with that statement, I had the pleasure of dining at Bistro Bis last night with three lovely companions.
Though I had three significant factors working against me (a glass of wine, a glass of champagne, and a bourbon) I will do my best to recall the food.
We did not order any appetizers, but spent quite awhile enjoying the bread basket. This consisted of what looked like a cheesy dinner rolls (I did not have one) and sliced baguette. Though it was simple, it was very delicious - crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside.
For my entree, I ordered the Bourride De Lotte: monkfish stew with squid, clams, mussels, fennel, leeks, potatoes, shellfish broth and garlic aioli. This was sublime. Each piece of seafood was perfectly cooked and served in a silky broth made from shelfish and quite a bit of sherry. I love seafood stews in general, but this was one of the better ones, based on my experience.
I also had the opportunity to taste my cousin's food which, of course, I took! She ordered the Quenelles De Poisson Americaine: Scallop mousse dumplings poached and glazed with rich lobster cream and The gnocchi. The latter dish was alright, but not particularly special - the gnocchi were a bit too oily and dense. The dumplings, however, were amazing. Ironically, the consistancy reminded me of gnocchi, but less chewy. The flavor was delicious. I would not have necessarily guessed 'scallps' in a blind tasting, but they definitely had an unobtrusive essence of seafood.
The service was prompt and friendly but not overbearing.
The delicious food and excellent company made for a very pleasant evening indeed and I hope to return to Bistro Bis in the near future!
