Reasonably priced birthday cakes

I need a birthday cake in a hurry - for Saturday! I had one on order from Veneiro's, but they were just temporarily shut down by the health dept. yesterday! Their cakes are delicious and reasonably priced, so I'm looking for the same thing at another bakery. Any ideas?

Little Ren Hen on the UES makes delicious cakes. Not sure about "custom" at this point, but definitely worth a call.

I ordered a birthday cake from Soutine Bakery years ago and it was wonderful. Delicious and delicate. A friend ordered a cake from the more recently (but still a while ago) and he was very pleased. I've also bought other baked goods more recently which were also good, if not quite on the same level as the birthday cake.

If you need something for Saturday you should try calling them immediately to see if they can accommodate you.

The kind of cake and frosting you want are important.

I, for example, don't like buttercream frosting. And I don't like Soutine or Two Little Red Hens because I don't like the kind of frosting they make.

On the other hand, I do like the kinds of frosting you get on the cakes from Cake Man Raven (Fort Greene, Brooklyn) - they're very expensive, though.

I meant specifically which cakes at Soutine.

I think I ordered vanilla cake with fresh berries and whipped cream (or maybe custard) witih whipped cream frosting. Yup, it must have been fresch berries and custard filling with whipped cream frosting. It was delicious. I think they warned me that it doesn't really keep so well after a day or so. That was fine since it went pretty quickly anyway. I'm salivating just looking at the Soutine order form.

This question comes up quite often, so you might want to do a search: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/511805
I like Billy's and Amy's, but I'm not sure how quickly they could get a special cake made.
