Conundrum (ME): Disappointment
I've always liked this funky, not-in-Portland bistro for its relaxed neighborhood hang-out ambience, superb wine list (best in the area by far), and generally tasty bistro-type food with Italian overtones. But when partner and I stopped by last evening for a quick bite on the way to a play reading, they let us down. SO is a fish-eating vegetarian, and once one got past the crab cakes (good, not spectacular) on the appetizers list, she was out of luck for the most part. There appeared to be a pasta dish without meat, but when asked, the server found out (menu was relatively new) that the dish had chicken in it that was intrinsic to the dish, even though menu didn't say so. So not a single non-meat pasta dish. There were a few salads available, but we wanted something a little heartier to share without choosing from the 5 entrees (one fish). So we compromised on the antipasto, requesting that some additional cheese be substituted for some of the meat. This arrived as a pile of various shaved meats, about equal in volume to a pile of sliced cheeses, with a mixed marinated chopped peppers and olives heap and a few lettuce leaves in the middle: completely uninteresting presentation, no mushrooms, etc. A request for additional bread was quickly honored. We decided just to eat and go. I'm sure I'll stop in again, but the place has definitely lost points in my book.
