Morels at Madison Farmer's Mkt?
I'm wondering if there are Morels for sale at the farmer's market, if you think there will still be some by may 24th, and if so...how much have they been running per pound?
My in-laws asked if they could bring anything when they come to visit for a week (SC) at the end of the month, but I don't want to ask for Morels if they are as expensive as they are down here.
I haven't been to market yet this spring, but I believe they appeared for the first time last week. They'll be pretty expensive, but the price varies week to week, usually getting lower as you get later into the season. By May 24 I would worry more about the morels being gone than the morels not having arrived.
From the May 9 market news email:
Market Manager, Larry Johnson says that asparagus, morel mushrooms and rhubarb will be available at market this Saturday. It is not the peak of production but the supply will be very reasonable.
No projections for the future, though! I suppose you could subscribe to the email list: http://dcfm.org/newslet.asp
I'm the same guy that recommended the Sazerac as a replacement (temporary) for the Old Fashioneds.
My sources say that the morel hunting is pretty good right now. Have no idea of the price per pound at the Dane County Farmer's Market, but I'll bet it's as good as you're going to see.
My rec: Ask your in-laws for a set dollar amount of morels, from the DCFM, and enjoy. You'll probably get more for your dollar, in morels, than anywhere in the universe.
Opinion. Not fact.
But Madison is: "73 square miles surrounded by reality".
Quote that to your in-laws and I hope they'll laugh.
I haven't been to Madison but the River Valley Mushroom Farm near Burlington Wisconsin, about 90 miles from Madison, had morels when we visited last Sunday. We bought 4 oz. for $10.
I WAS MOREL HUNTING THIS WEEKEND AND ONLY FOUND ABOUT 2 POUNDS WORTH. THEY SHOULD BE COMING UP IN THE NEXT WEEK OR TOO. I SELL THEM FOR ABOUT 40 A POUND. I AVERAGE ABOUT 20 POUNDS A SEASON
