Review - Meskerem on Danforth
Went there last night with a friend. We both got the vegetarian sampler. So I can't speak to the quality of the meat dishes here.
It was a bit slow getting served. I suspect they went to one of the local markets to fill up on ingredients. When it did get there, however, it was very nice. A lot of different flavours on the plate. There were green lentils, spicy red beans/pulses, collard greens, white beans/pulses, cabbage and potato and carrot, and a green salad in the middle. They just brought one injear platter and put two of everything on it.
Plenty of injera on the side to eat with. The owner came and offered us our choice of one free choice from what we had, so my friend picked the cabbage mixture and a good sized portion was added in a few minutes. Then we were offered free coffee, which my friend turned down (caffeine hits him hard, I guess) but which I accepted. The owner came out and showed us the roasted beans first, then I was given a demitasse of very good strong cofee.
Twenty dollars later (I paid for both), I was pleasantly stuffed and very pleased with the service and food. My friend pointed out as I was walking him to the subway that the food there had less oil than other Ethiopian places, which I did not think of during the meal but agreed with when he said it.
I would recommend this place as a darn good place to eat. If anyone tries out one of their meat offerings, I would appreciate hearing about it.
