Bar with good German Wheat Beer Selection

lauralb May 5, 2008 02:59 PM

I am looking for a bar with a good selection of german beers as the title suggests. Can anyone suggest a nice place? I remember reading about someplace where you could sample maybe five small amounts of beers for a certain price. I'm sure there are many places like that but I am looking for one with good german wheat beers.

I think you're thinking of Loreley. It's on Rivington between Bowery and Chrystie, and as I recall you can do a tasting of 5 beers for something like $10. They don't have a TON of beers, but I think they're all German. You may also want to investigate the following places:

    Zum Schneider
    Hallo Berlin

I'm not sure how many wheats they have, but they have a good selection of German beers, I think. Maybe call or check their online menu -- Cafe D'Alsace (on the UES).

There are multiple places thate meet your request. Of course the German places with Loreley being the one with the most wheat beers. Also Puck Fair has about 5-6 wheat beers. Standings does a sampler platter of beers.

Loreley has two German wheat beers - Franziskaner and Wiehenstephaner - but usually no more. I really like the Franziskaner but I'm not a huge fan of the Wiehenstephaner. I also don't think you can sample a bunch of beers except for te Kolsch sampler.

You can try www.beermenus.com - but it's only useful if you know the beer you're looking for.

Resto is Belgian, by the way.
