Dim Sum Reception/Banquet?

Hello everyone... I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I'm getting married late in the year and am a huge dim sum fiend. Fi and I recently went to Ocean Star and saw that someone was having a banquet. Although it appeared that they were not doing dim sum, it got the gears in my head going.

I know that the reception would have to be on brunch side (That is actually not a problem), we don't need anything set up, or specially decorated, just a good meal to share with our friends. The only thing that has me a bit initimidated is that we aren't Chinese and I
tia!wonder if any Dim Sum place would be willing to do this. Plus our list is about 100 people.

So tell me, will they just laugh at us for suggesting it? Where would recommend we look at first?

tia.

Thank you so much everyone! You don't know how much better it makes me feel so much better and Fi seems to warming up to the idea. We are going to Mission 261 to check things out this weekend to start there...

Just checking back to say that Dim Sum at Mission 261 was a success. I've always heard mixed things from my Chinese friends, but was really pleased with the flavor and quality of what we ordered. Although it was basic, I think it's just enough for our mostly non-chinese crowd to really appreciate...

Also, depending on where you go, and who you go with, you can have a very large party especially for dim sum, (as I have in the past with a party of around 70 people or so). The hosts are accommodating and very nice at some of the larger dinner party oriented places. If you can get someone who does speak mandarin or cantonese as well as english you might be in a better situation but I think should be able to work something although as ipsedixit said with that many guests you would have to pre-order the food, although they would still be brought out in old style dim sum carts.

We've attended dim sum banquets at NBC Seafood in their secondary banquet room, which is currently being torn up in remodeling. I believe they were red egg parties for newborns, so if you had a Saturday wedding it could work.

To make something like this (a dim sum reception for 100 people) work you need to go to a an order-off-the-menu place. A restaurant like Ocean Star, which is cart-style would not work, logistically.

Try Mission 261, Elite, Triumphal Palace -- all of those places can provide you with private rooms.

More likely than not, the restaurant will probably make you pre-order the stuff you want, so you may not be able to have your guests pick and choose, but ask, cuz you never know. It may all come down to how much $$$ you want to spend.

          Good luck.
