Muddy River Smokehouse in Portsmouth????

Has anyone tried this place? How are the steaks? How's the BBQ? What's the atmosphere & service like?

  1. Have had their Q many times, good quality, casual atmosphere. Not the best I've ever had but it's OK. and reasonable.

    1. haven't been a couple of years but i was Not a fan of their BBQ.
from what i remember they serve Wet Ribs that are too done (i.e. fall off the bone, ewwww!).
it just didn't seem like proper Q.

You may already know this, but MRS is owned by the folks that owned The Roma. I haven't, however, tried the BBQ.

A friend is playing a show there this summer so I expect I'll get the chance then.

          The Roma? in Haverhill?
          another Pit of Despair.

I slung ziti there for 8 yrs ... probably waited on you.

The food was better back then for sure(late 80s, early 90's) but I wouldn't go there now!

              i ate there 3x.
but i put "workers" in their kitchen when i ran a "placement agency" so i've been in the kitchen.

You're being very kind, a can of spaghetti' o's would be fine cuisine compared to the Roma. It was OK in the 80's, went back for a function about 4or5 years ago. Ech... I couldn't imagine they're the same owners of MRS.

it's same folks that ran the roma in the 80's...I think they sold around 1998 or so... their standards are clearly higher than whoever runs it now.

I also believe there is some competition for BBQ recently come to Portsmouth...but i can't remember name or location.

        2. I've only tried it when it had the original owners and the food (bbq) was pretty blah. I haven't heard anything good about it recently.

The original owners opened the Muddy River Marketplace in Elliot Maine. We ate there a year or so ago and it was pretty good, but not great, we only ate the ribs:

          1. I like the food at the MRS. The barbeque is decent, better than most.
The fried pickle appetizer is fantastic. Salty, tangy, and fried, what more could you want with a frosty beer?
On my way north to the land of lobster, crab and fresh fish I would never consider stopping for BBQ. But after several days of pigging out on fine fishes, a big hunk of pork on the ride home hits the spot. They've got some funny T-shirts for sale, and the place is clean.
