Gracious Homes Knife Sharpening?

Has anyone ever had their knives sharpened at Gracious Homes? I just called them and they charge $1 an inch of blade. They told me they don't sharpen knives for any restaurants, but they have a lot of people drop them off - enough to cause at least a 3 day turn around. I live on the UWS and would like a good local place.

    1. Have you called Zabar's?

      Store is 'Gracious HOME'

      Give this guy a call - - -
      Henry Westpfal: Knife Man
      105 West 30th Street (6th-7th)
      New York, NY
      Phone: 212.563.5990
In addition to knives, they will sharpen scissors, pinking shears, toenail and cuticle nippers, and straight blades. For a small knife, figure $3.50 for sharpening. A 10-inch chef's knife with a high carbon stainless blade is $6.75. Closed weekends.

          Thanks - I did call Zabar's - they don't do it there.

On many weekends there is a truck parked outside Zabars

westfal is what i use..they do a fine job

                • I have not tried Gracious Home. Last summer when I called them, they said only their store on the east side did it.

So I went to the woman in Chelsea Market (I think it's called Samurai Sharpening). She was great and I got great results. I had her do 2 paring knives, a serated tomato knife, and a chef knife, plus a pair of scissors. I think she charges $3 a small blade and $5 a large blade (but I don't recall exactly). She also repaired one of the tips that I had bent on a knife. She completes the work in about an hour or so. So when you drop off, you can stroll around and shop and then go back. It was very convenient.

                      • Reviving an older thread, here...

I love the Chelsea Market knife lady, which LNG recommended, above (she's very skilled), but I, too, would like a sharpener more local to the UWS.

These days, the sharpener that Harrison recommended doesn't seem to be in front of Zabar's that often, so I'd love to be able to call ahead before I bundle up my knives for a trip. Does anyone know what this knife sharpener's schedule is, or his/her name, so I can look up the schedule? Does anyone who's used him/her, before, have any comments about the sharpening?

Update on the sharpener in front of Zabar's because evidently, you're all eager to know: His sign says he's there every Saturday from 2 p.m. to, I think, 6 p.m.

(I was a poor sleuth and didn't write down his name or price list.)

You are too funny. Did you ever find out if the Gracious Home on the west side does sharpening too? I'm still going down to Chelsea Market for mine.
