12th and A

I'm moving this week to East 12th Street and Avenue A. I've lived in the West Village for 2 years, so I know that side of town pretty well, but what are your favorite restaurants in this area? I'm particularly interested in anything moderately priced (on a college student budget here) and I'm on a gluten-free diet, so I'm not the biggest fan of Italian food, as it's difficult unless they have a GF menu.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

A few to get you started:
Artichoke, Max, Momofuku (All), Westville East

I've walked by there a few times, and it looks really good. Any recommendations?

The burger. So, so good. I like it with Swiss and grilled onions but in any event the juice is tastily soaked up by a delicious Portuguese bun.

I also dig the corn on the cob. Generally speaking, I prefer to go in small groups in order to taste a bunch of the veggie market sides (brussel sprouts and fennel are always great bets).

Try Terroir. The new Wine Bar in the area.

Terroir is overpriced and the food is nothing to write home about. Avoid it, especially since you're on a student budget!

Gramstand is a great tea shop over there as well. With free wifi it is also a perfect place for studying.

I live very close... here are my reccos (all are reasonably priced):

              Westville East
              Back Forty (Amercian/organic/locavore)
              Sapporo East (sushi/japanese)
              Chickpea (mediterranean)
              Cafecito (cuban)
              Vamos (mexican)
Barbone (northern italian, lots more than pasta)

Terroir is fantastic, and there are lots of small plates that are reasonably priced, not to mention a happy hour menu with drink specials. Definitely try it - 12th between 1st and A. Drop Off Service on 13th and A also has a great happy hour, $3-5 drinks.

Welcome to the neighborhood! I also live at 12th and A...I second Barbone. I also love Pata Negra, the wine bar on 12th and 2nd...it's also next to S'Mac, the best mac and cheese place - but not very non-gluten friendly. Angelica (12th btw 1st and 2nd) is also good for vegetarian food

S'Mac just introduced GF Mac & Cheese. Needless to say, it's the one place in the neighborhood I've already tried.
