The Big Island
I have never been to Hawaii before and am going to be on the Big Island for 4 days. I would love suggestions on local and fine dining establishments. Cost is not an issue, but sightseeing and finding great food in the process is essential
The best new restaurant is the Holuakoa Cafe in Holualoa town, which is just above Kailua-Kona...the chef (Wilson Reed) presents outstanding freshly made pasta dished with either gnoochi or risotto complemented with whatever is available from local farmers. Reservations are a must, given limited seating.
Local sights may be a bit disappointing, given the recent upsurge in the amount of vog (volcanic haze) but the sacred City of Refuge is an interesting bit of Hawaiian culture.
Snorkelling in Kealakekua Bay is the best.
The drive to the northern end of the island can be breath-taking when accompanied by lunch at the Bamboo Restaurant in Hawi followed by a large dish of Tropical Delight ice cream.
