The Broadway Deli is easily the best deli in Santa Monica. On the 3rd St Promenade and Broadway. It's not a conventional or a traditional deli, more of an upscale "California" deli. The bakery is run by Michel Richard who is considered to be one of the best chefs in the city. The rest of it is run collectively by Ziedler (a real foodie), Michel Richard and Bruce Marder (also one of the best chefs in the city - he spends most of his time at Capo or Brass Cap).

The others are Fromins - which is pretty traditional and not exactly special. Same with Izzy's - which delivers and is open 24 hours. When I'm massively hungover a patty melt from Izzy's with french fries is very satisfying. But I do know friends who simply loathe the joint.

I don't think that there is a single good deli in Santa Monica unfortunately. Yes there are Fromin's and Izzy's which are passable. I believe that Broadway Deli has gone downhill during the past number of years. I vote for schlepping to Factors, on Pico in West L.A.!!!

if you're gonna schlep as far as factor's, i'd go to barney greengrass in BH....no one in LA does better NY deli. scrambled eggs with lox & onions, and a toasted kossar's bialy - heaven on a plate.

Fan of Barney's too. Oddly upscale, but oddly in comparison to the Barney's on Amsterdam in NY. Which it terms of atmosphere is polar opposite. (NY Barney's is funky, funky charm.) I've never tried Factors. Is it better, same, different or worse than Junior's?

I wholeheartedly agree that Broadway Deli has gone down hill. The service has gotten really bad..if non-existent. The food is just not as good as it used to be.

Bay Cities Deli is an extraordinary deli, but be aware it is an Italian style rather than a Jewish deli. The real highlight there are their rolls -- crusty, dense, the bread in the middle a bit sour. Many people recommend the Godmother sandwich, which has a couple slices each of many highgrade meats -- proscuitto, capicolla, etc etc. Others like their poor boy, a much thicker sub with huge portions of bologna and ham -- buy another roll and you could make a second sandwich out of it. Personally, I love the meatball sub, but if you are carrying it out request it deconstructed -- it doesn't travel well as the tomato sauce mushes the bread after too long a wait. If you go during prime lunch rush be aware that there usually is no wait on the hot side, to the right near the entrance and the checkout lines, where you can get the meatball subs as well as very good and reasonably priced lasagna, potroast, meatloaf, chicken or eggplant parm and other hot items.

Bear in mind that this is more of a grocery deli with take out...there are a few picnic table type things outside in front, but this is not a sit down deli along the lines of nate n als, canters, langers etc.

search the los angeles board - there are TONS of posts.

while i've never been there myself, i think you'll find that the CH crowd favorite is bay cities deli.
