Shots Fired
As I sat in the bunker-like dining room, I could see a team of men in desert camouflage uniforms eating huge portions of food. And at other tables were groups of men and women in various uniforms depicting their deployment. Gunfire rang out every so often.
This was breakfast at the LAPD Police Academy in Elysian Park.
The grounds are very bucolic, with gardens and fountains. The 1920’s architecture is historically significant, and the people are friendly in an old-LA way.
The diner is not run down, per se, but certainly has not been updated recently. There’s a selection of normal diner food, bacon and eggs, pancakes, etc.
Service is okay. They’re quick to take your order, but once they deliver your food, sayonara.
The bacon is semi-thick, crunchy and not greasy. The eggs are very large and cooked perfectly. When I ask for them to be cooked over medium, I don’t want any part of the whites to still be clear jelly. I want them completely cooked. Here it was exactly the way I wanted. The hash browns were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. And the toast is made with real bread like you buy at the market, not little tiny slices made to shave a half penny off of the cost.
This is a good place to go for something different. I won’t make the trip often, but it’s nice for a change.

Maybe they could start opening up to the Dodger Stadium crowd on game days. LAPD could sure use the income....

As the link above shows, the Police Academy serves a hearty, simple, very inexpensive lunch as well as a good basic breakfast. It makes a very unusual and interesting break from the usual lunch routine for those who work in the courts, government offices, or business highrises downtown. Just make sure that whoever is driving has their registration sticker on their license plate up to date!
