Cafe on Clinton?

I have never been to Cafe on Clinton, and read mixed things after the ownership changed up. Any recent-ish experiences? It looks so adorable, and the menu sounds good to me (as a vegetarian).

I think because it’s been a neighborhood place for so long (I think 17 years which is a longer then most places in the area) a lot of people, myself included, didn’t think the place needed to be changed – don’t rock the boat if it doesn’t need rockin’. Change happens and you deal. That being said, we’ve been there recently for brunches & dinners and the food is still good, but not as good as it was under the old ownership IMO. They also significantly trimmed down their menu. You should have a good time so please go, enjoy and post about your experience.

I was there about a year ago after the new chef took over. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing. Everything was carefully prepared and very good. Definately worth a stop in.

Thanks to both of you for your responses! Depending on the weather, we may head over this weekend to give it a try.

The "new" Cafe's menu is a much more elevated - both in cuisine and price. As such, we found ourselves at the "old" Cafe a lot more often. The old menu was great - affordable comfort food. A simple piece of fish, served with mashed potatoes and green beans. Brilliant!

However, if I'm craving a burger (cooked perfectly medium rare), some oysters, and a beer within 2 blocks from home - Cafe's a great option.

Good to know that they have a good burger, because I am the only vegetarian in the bunch! How's the macaroni and cheese?

I, too, was the only veg in our group that dined there about two months ago. The mac and cheese is solidly good, not amazing, but I'd order it again. It isn't super cheesy so you don't leaving feeling like you just ate 1000 calories of dairy (though it was a bit heavy on the butter so I probably still did).

Overall, we enjoyed our experience. The service was very pleasant, the drinks are nicely made (I loved my dark & stormy), and I'm glad I saved room for dessert as they were quite good. About the only thing I wouldn't order again was the panzanella salad - it was like 95% olives with just a few stray pieces of bread and tomato.

I just had dinner there with my family. The appetizers were good, although very small portions. I had the soft shelled crabs, well prepared, but a bit too pricey at $28 for the dish. It was served with a small salad.
Also had a shot of scotch that was very shallow in the glass. I liked the food, but won't go back there, as I was a fan of the old Cafe management and food. They used to have a Lobster special there on Tuesday nights for $15 that couldn't be beat. If I want to spend that kind of money, I'll go elsewhere.
