Downtown: good food, fun, hip, and quiet

I'm going out with two very old friends tonight and we are looking for a place to eat where we can relax and easily hear each other, but also has delicious food. We need to be downtown--anywhere below 23rd Street. Somehow the only thing that springs to mind is Five POints, but I'm guessing it will be really loud. (I've only been there at off hours, and it was quiet and mellow but it probably isn't always that way.) Not super-expensive.

I am just drawing a blank. Please help!

      Extra Virgin is one of the noisiest places around.

        Malatesta is a rustic Italian place in the far west village. I think it's on Christopher and Washington. The food is good and I think it only gets loud on the weekends.

          Jarnac is a nice, quiet bistro in the West Village. Pepolino is an excellent Italian on West Broadway just below Canal. North Square is a nice comfortable place on Washington Square.

            I was just at North Square last week, definitely cozy and quiet. Very good food. Not mind-blowing, but very good.
